BACKGROUND Many bacteria are facultative anaerobes, and can proliferate in both anoxic and oxic environments. Under anaerobic conditions, fermentation is the primary means of energy generation in contrast to respiration. Furthermore, the rates and spectra of spontaneous mutations that arise during anaerobic growth differ to those under aerobic growth. A long-term selection experiment was undert...

Reports of aerobic biogenic methane (CH4) have generated new views about CH4 sources in nature. We examine this phenomenon the free-flowing Yellowstone river wherein concentrations were tracked as a function environmental conditions, phototrophic microorganisms (using chlorophyll a, Chl proxy), well targeted methylated amines known to be associated with process. was positively correlated temper...

Adaptation to the aerobic environment has been investigated in heterofermentative lactobacilli, while data on how homofermentative lactobacilli adapt to oxygen are limited. We report here the draft genome sequences of the aerobic strains Lactobacillus gasseri AL3 and AL5 that allow an in-depth investigation of the genes involved in oxidative metabolism and the stress response.

BACKGROUND While considerable attention has been given to quantifying leisure-time physical activity (LTPA) among subpopulations, less attention has focused on the perception of the experience as leisure. The current study describes the prevalence of leisure-like experiences during LTPA among college students. We describe the social contexts and activity settings that contribute to participant ...

Aerobic ammonia oxidation is the process that converts ammonium to nitrate and thus links the regeneration of organic nitrogen to fixed nitrogen loss by denitrification. It is performed by a phylogenetically restricted group of Proteobacteria (ammonia-oxidizing bacteria, AOB) that are autotrophic and obligately aerobic. This chapter describes methods for the measurement of ammonia oxidation in ...

background: polychlorinated biphenyls (pcbs) are synthetic aromatic compounds containing two benzene rings with one to ten chlorine atoms. there are concerns about the health risks of these compounds in the environment due to their toxicity, persistence, and biological accumulation. pcbs wastes must be treated before being discharged to the environment because they will pollute the water, soil,...

Aerobic treatment has many advantages including: 1) minimum odor when properly loaded and maintained; 2) large biochemical oxygen demand (BOD) removals providing a good quality effluent; 3) high rate treatment allowing smaller scale systems, e.g., less land required; 4) the final discharge may contain dissolved oxygen which reduces the immediate oxygen demand on a receiving water; and 5) the ae...
