Nonpolio acute flaccid paralysis is increasing in India. To determine viral causes, we conducted cell culture and molecular analysis identification of nonpolio human enteroviruses associated with acute flaccid paralysis during March-August 2010 in northern India. The predominant nonpolio enterovirus found was echovirus 13, a serotype rarely isolated in India.
OBJECTIVE IgG and IgA immunocompetence of children with wild poliovirus poliomyelitis and non-polio acute flaccid paralysis. METHODS 932 cases of acute flaccid paralysis, reported in 2008-2009, were tested for presence of polio and non-polio enteroviruses according to the WHO standards. Serum IgA and IgG levels were determined by sandwich ELISA. RESULTS Mean (SD) IgA levels [0.87 (0.62)g/L;...
In an attempt to determine the types of non-polio enteroviruses (NPEVs) in acute flaccid paralysis (AFP) cases in Iran, we detected enterovirus 71 (EV71) in an AFP case with residual paralysis for the first time. Cell culture detected no enteroviruses, while RT-PCR and subsequent sequencing revealed that the specimen was positive for EV71. EV71 is the causative agent of a variety of diseases fr...
distal renal tubular acidosis is a syndrome of abnormal urine acidification and is characterized by hyperchloremic metabolic acidosis, hypokalemia, hypercalciurea, nephrocalcinosis and nephrolithiasis. despite the presence of persistent hypokalemia, acute muscular paralysis is rarely encountered in males.here, we will report an eighteen year old male patient who presented with flaccid quadripar...
Acute Flaccid Myelitis (AFM), a polio-like paralysis in children no older than 21, has recently reemerged and increasing numbers of such cases have been reported worldwide since 2012. Accurate and early diagnosis of this condition could help with better management of the disease. A 9- year- old girl with chief complaint of headache, fever and vomiting was subsequently affected by an acute...
Background: Diseases that cause acute flaccid paralysis (AFP) often progress rapidly, thus may cause life threatening complications, therefore, their diagnosis and cure are important. This study was carried out to investigate the causes of acute generalized weakness in children referred to Amirkola Children’s Hospital, in Babol, Iran. Methods: In this case series, the epidemiological causes of...
