Actinomyces spp. are considered rare pathogens in today's medicine, especially with thoracic vertebral involvement. Classic actinomycosis (50%) presents as an oral-cervicofacial ("lumpy jaw") infection. This report describes a case of spinal cord compression caused by Actinomyces israelii with the coisolation of Fusobacterium nucleatum. There are limited numbers of similar cases.

present paper reports a case of breast actinomycosis due to actinomyces israelii in a 31-year-ol female nurse from shahrekord, in iran. diagnosis was based on the observation of short and very fine gram-positive filaments in direct examination of aspirates from fistulas, as well as isolation of organism in sodium thioglycolate and brain heart infusion blood agar (bhib) culture media, under anae...

Actinomyces israelii usually causes chronic suppurative and granulomatous infections. Isolated pleural effusion due to Actinomycosis is rare. This report describes an unusual case of thoracic empyema caused by A. israelii with sudden onset and rapid deterioration that failed to respond to chest tube drainage and antibiotherapy. Empyema drainage and visceral parietal pleurectomy by a left postol...

Actinomyces israelii has long been recognized as a causative agent of actinomycosis. During the past 3 decades, a large number of novel Actinomyces species have been described. Their detection and identification in clinical microbiology laboratories and recognition as pathogens in clinical settings can be challenging. With the introduction of advanced molecular methods, knowledge about their cl...

Typical actinomycosis has been produced in mice following single intraperitoneal injections of saline suspensions of Actinomyces israelii and A. naeslundii. A. israelii produced infections in 95.8% of the animals inoculated. A. naeslundii, generally considered to be a saprophytic organism, produced lesions in 89.7% of the inoculated animals. The finding that A. naeslundii produced lesions in mi...
