The forward scattering series is an important and useful tool in constructing perturbative solutions to wave equation and understanding their relationship to their non-perturbative counterparts. When it converges, the series describes the total wavefield everywhere in a given medium as propagations in a reference medium and interactions with point scatterers. The method can be viewed as constru...

Observations of scattering of low-frequency sound in the ocean have focused largely on effects at long ranges, involving multiple scattering events. Fluctuations due to one and two scattering events are analyzed here, using 75-Hz broadband signals transmitted in the eastern North Pacific Ocean. The experimental geometry gives two purely refracted arrivals. The temporal and vertical scales of ph...

Classical acoustic and elastic wave scattering problems from an acoustically rigid or soft cylinder are revisited. The behavior of phases as well as magnitudes of each partial waves and form functions are numerically analyzed and discussed. The effect of mode conversion, especially, on the phases of each partial waves in elastic wave scattering is identified.

Standard boundary or finite element methods for problems of high frequency acoustic scattering by convex polygons have a computational cost that grows in direct proportion to the frequency of the incident wave. Here we present a novel Galerkin boundary element method, using plane wave basis functions on a graded mesh, for which the number of degrees of freedom required to achieve a prescribed l...

The integrated extinction (IE) is defined as the integral of the scattering cross section as a function of wavelength. Sohl et al. (2007 J. Acoust. Soc. Am.122, 3206-3210. (doi:10.1121/1.2801546)) derived an IE expression for acoustic scattering that is causal, i.e. the scattered wavefront in the forward direction arrives later than the incident plane wave in the background medium. The IE formu...

Mourre's commutator method is used together with Besov spaces, in this paper, to settle the question of uniqueness of solutions to the scattering problem for the acoustic wave propagation in perturbed stratiied uids in R n with n 2: The uniqueness of solutions is established by introducing a radiation condition in the framework of Besov spaces, and is then used to prove resolvent estimates in t...
