This study investigated the basis for intrinsic amphotericin B (AMB) resistance in Aspergillus terreus. The ergosterol content, cell wall composition, and lipid peroxidation level had no influence on AMB resistance. The level of catalase production in A. terreus was significantly higher than that in A. fumigatus (P < 0.05). This higher-level production may contribute to AMB resistance in A. ter...

Holocellulose structures from agro-industrial residues rely on main and side chain attacking enzymes with different specificities for complete hydrolysis. Combinations of crude enzymatic extracts from different fungal species, including Aspergillus terreus, Aspergillus oryzae, Aspergillus niger and Trichoderma longibrachiatum, were applied to sugar cane bagasse, banana stem and dirty cotton res...

A 35-year-old man developed invasive pulmonary aspergillosis (IPA) with severe neutropenia after umbilical cord stem cell transplantation for chronic myelogenous leukemia. Filamentous fungus isolated from his sputum was identified as Aspergillus terreus. Despite systemic amphotericin B (AMPH) administration, IPA progressed. However, intravenous administration of micafungin (MCFG) and oral itrac...

A recent article by Palonen et al. describes the effect of butyrolactone I on the expression of a secondary metabolite biosynthesis gene cluster from Aspergillus terreus that shows similarities to fusarubin biosynthesis gene clusters from Fusarium species. The authors claim that two different types of pigments are formed in Aspergillus terreus conidia, whereby one pigment is termed a DOPA-type ...

BACKGROUND Artemisinin (1) and its derivatives are now being widely used as antimalarial drugs, and they also exhibited good antitumor activities. So there has been much interest in the structural modification of artemisinin and its derivatives because of their effective bioactivities. The microbial transformation is a promising route to obtain artemisinin derivatives. The present study focuses...

Itaconic acid was best produced by fungal species than bacterial species. The A. niger and A. terreus were known to be the best species for itaconic acid production among the different fungal species studied. However, there was no comprehensive study on using latest technologies for increasing the productivity at industrial level and it was not properly established. By keeping this in view, the...

We report a case of Aspergillus terreus discitis which developed in a patient with acute lymphoblastic leukemia following induction chemotherapy. A. terreus was isolated from sputum, one month earlier, but the physician did not consider it significant at the time. Magnetic resonance imaging study showed the involvement of L3-4, L4-5 and L5-S1 intervertebral discs. Etiology was established by me...

Filamentous fungi of the Ascomycota phylum are known to contain a family of conserved conidiation regulating proteins with distinctive velvet domains. In Aspergilli, this velvet family includes four proteins, VeA, VelB, VelC and VosA, and is involved in conidiation and secondary metabolism along with a global regulator LaeA. In A. terreus, the overexpression of LaeA has been observed to increas...

Aspergillus terreus is a species which is being seen increasingly frequently and which is highly resistant to amphotericin B in vitro and clinically. We evaluated amphotericin B, caspofungin, and posaconazole in a murine model of acute invasive aspergillosis. Caspofungin and posaconazole both appeared beneficial and may be reasonable treatment alternatives for infection with A. terreus.

Territrem C, a new tremorgenic mycotoxin (C28H3209; molecular weight, 512.20) was isolated from the chloroform extract of rice cultures of Aspergillus terreus 23-1, which also produces territrems A and B. Isolation, acute toxicity, and some physicochemical properties of territrem C are discussed in this paper. The spectral and chemical evidence indicated that the structural difference between t...
