When the transition of operational activities is framed not as an instantaneous optimization problem but rather a series of incremental opportunistic choices formal continuous improvement (CI) capabilities prove useful. However, despite the well documented advantages of CI management, implementation failures are discouragingly high (Jazayeri and Hopper, 1999). In the quality literature the most...

High endothelial venules (HEV) allow rapid and selective lymphocyte trafficking from the blood into secondary lymphoid tissues. Here we report the expression profile of active genes in mouse high endothelial cells (HEC). HEC were first purified from mouse lymph nodes (LN) by magnetic cell sorting with MECA-79 mAb and a 3'-directed cDNA library that faithfully represents the composition of mRNA ...

Using a rat model we have previously proposed a role for fibronectin as an adhesive ligand on high endothelial cells (HEC) for recirculating lymphocytes. Lymphocyte adhesion to high endothelial cells was blocked by CS1 peptide (from the type IH connecting segment of fibronectin) and RGD-containing peptides using two different in vitro assays of lymphocyte-HEC recognition, the frozen section ass...

The development of human endometrial carcinoma (HEC) is a complex pathologic process involves several oncogenes and tumor suppressor genes. The full-length paired-box gene 2 (pax2), a recently discovered oncogene, promotes cell proliferation and growth and inhibits apoptosis of HEC cells. Here, we examined the effect of pax2 small interfering RNA (siRNA) on the growth of transplanted HEC cells ...

Cellulose based polymers have shown tremendous potential as drug delivery carrier for oral drug delivery system (DDS). Hydroxyethyl cellulose (HEC) and hydroxypropyl cellulose (HPC) are widely explored as excipients to improve the solubility of poorly water soluble drugs and to improve self-life of dosage form. This work is an attempt to modulate the physicochemical properties of these cellulos...

Chitosan-beta glycerophosphate-hydroxyethyl cellulose (CH-GP-HEC) is a biocompatible and biodegradable scaffold exhibiting a sol-gel transition at 37°C. Chondrogenic factors or mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) can be included in the CH-GP-HEC, and injected into the site of injury to fill the cartilage tissue defects with minimal invasion and pain. The possible impact of the injectable CH-GP-HEC on...

For decades, performance has driven the high-end computing (HEC) community. However, as highlighted in recent exascale studies that chart a path from petascale to exascale computing, power consumption is fast becoming the major design constraint in HEC. Consequently, the HEC community needs to address this issue in future petascale and exascale computing systems. Current scientific benchmarks, ...

We have examined the effect of the virulent Leptospira interrogans strain Teramo, serotype icterohemorrhagiae, on the adherence of human neutrophilic polymorphonuclear leukocytes (PMN) to cultured human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HEC). Selective pretreatment of HEC with intact or sonicated leptospires caused a dose- and time-dependent increase of HEC-PMN adhesion (13.2% +/- 2.5% adherenc...

Hydroxyethyl cellulose (HEC) is used as a neutral excipient in microbicides used against sexually transmitted pathogens. However, HEC inhibits the infection of cervical epithelial cells by Chlamydia trachomatis at pH 5 in a concentration-dependent manner. At pH 7, infection is inversely dependent on the concentration of HEC, possibly due to pH-dependent calcium sequestration.
