Free NH 2-substituted 3-arylindoles have been prepared usually in good to high yields through the palladium-catalyzed reaction of readily available 2-alkynyltrifluoroacetanilides with arylboronic acids under oxidative conditions. The reaction tolerates a variety of useful functional groups both in the arylboronic acid and in the alkyne, including chloro, formyl, and ester groups.

In the crystal structure of the title compound, C(8)H(5)ClO(3), both formyl groups are in the plane of the chloro-phenyl unit and the mol-ecule is stabilized by intra-molecular O-H⋯O hydrogen bonding. The mol-ecules are connected via inter-molecular O-H⋯O hydrogen bonding into chains and are stacked into columns with a centroid-centroid distance between adjacent aromatic rings of 3.914 (2) Å.
