We present high resolution (∼ 5′′) maps of the J = 1 0 transitions of 13CO and C18O towards the nucleus of NGC 6946, made with the Owens Valley Millimeter Array. The images are compared with existing 12CO(1-0) maps to investigate localized changes in gas properties across the nucleus. As compared to 12CO, both 13CO and C18O are more confined to the central ring of molecular gas associated with ...
Context. Most diffuse clouds are only known as kinematic features in absorption spectra, but those with appreciable H2 content may be visible in the emission of such small molecules as CH, OH, and CO. Aims. We interpret in greater detail the extensive observations of 12CO emission from diffuse gas seen around the archetypical line of sight to ζ Oph. Methods. The 12CO emission is imaged in posit...
Aims. Observations of the molecular gas over scales of ∼0.5 to several kpc provide crucial information on how molecular gas moves through galaxies, especially in mergers and interacting systems, where it ultimately reaches the galaxy center, accumulates, and feeds nuclear activity. Studying the processes involved in the gas transport is one of the important steps forward to understand galaxy ev...
Polar molecules in selected quantum states can be guided, decelerated, and trapped using electric fields created by microstructured electrodes on a chip. Here we explore how nonadiabatic transitions between levels in which the molecules are trapped and levels in which the molecules are not trapped can be suppressed. We use 12CO and 13CO (a 3 1,v = 0) molecules, prepared in the upper -doublet co...
We have observed Sakurai’s object in the S(1)λ2.121 line of H2 and in the J = 2 → 1 line of 12CO. We give upper limits on the H2 and 12CO emission from the planetary nebula associated with this object. Assuming a distance of 3.8 kpc, we obtain an upper limit on the mass of molecular hydrogen in the planetary nebula of 1.8 10−4 M for an excitation temperature of 1000 K and, for an excitation tem...
We present a multi-line study of the massive star-forming region IRAS 22506+5944. A new 6.7 GHz methanol maser was detected. 12CO, 13CO, C18O and HCO J = 1-0 transition observations reveal a star formation complex consisting mainly of two cores. The dominant core has a mass of more than 200 M⊙, while another one only about 35 M⊙. Both cores are obviously at different evolutionary stages. A 12CO...
Observations of 12CO at high redshift indicate rapid metal enrichment in the nuclear regions of at least some galaxies in the early universe. However, the enrichment may be limited to nuclei that are synthesized by short-lived massive stars, excluding classical “secondary” nuclei like 13C. Testing this idea, we used the IRAM Interferometer to tentatively detect the 13CO J = 3 → 2 line at a leve...
The COMPLETE Survey of Star-Forming regions offers an unusually comprehensive and diverse set of measurements of the distribution and temperature of dust and gas in molecular clouds, and in this paper we use those data to find new calibrations of the “X-factor” and the 13CO abundance within Perseus. To carry out our analysis, we: 1) apply the NICER (Near-Infrared Color Excess Method Revisited) ...
The high-resolution (R 1⁄4 25; 000) infrared M-band spectrum of the massive protostar NGC 7538 IRS 9 shows a narrow absorption feature at 4.779 lm (2092.3 cm 1) that we attribute to the vibrational stretching mode of the 13CO isotope in pure CO icy grain mantles. This is the first detection of 13CO in icy grain mantles in the interstellar medium. The 13CO band is a factor of 2.3 narrower than t...
