The enzyme cis-3-chloroacrylic acid dehalogenase (cis-CaaD) is found in a bacterial pathway that degrades a synthetic nematocide, cis-1,3-dichloropropene, introduced in the 20th century. The previously determined crystal structure of cis-CaaD and its promiscuous phenylpyruvate tautomerase (PPT) activity link this dehalogenase to the tautomerase superfamily, a group of homologous proteins that a...
The patient is a 70-year-old male with no other atherogenic risk factors who presented with an acute coronary syndrome (ACS) of unstable angina subsequently complicated by a non-ST elevation myocardial infarction (NSTEMI). The patient's presentation posed 3 unique features: (1) cardiac catheterization demonstrated nonobstructive 3-vessel multi-aneurysmal coronary artery disease with sluggish an...
This paper introduces a reflective perspective on the role of computing in architectural design over the previous generations of computer aided design. Paradigms of the design process and computational models of designing are discussed. The evolution of computer aided architectural design is investigated. Both deadly sins and arguable virtues of computing in architectural design and their impli...
In this paper we introduce a content-oriented scheme for protocol studies of designers and demonstrate its benefit for CAAD research. The structure of the coding scheme is described. We discuss how this method can benefit CAAD research and its differences from the process-oriented method used previously. With this method we analyze data to describe the design process as the combination of senso...
This paper introduces the concept of cognition-based CAAD. Protocol analysis and a content-oriented coding scheme are utilised to produce cognitive results of designers’ behaviour. This empirical analysis suggests that the speed of thought and vagueness among actions are the main areas to be supported by any cognition-based CAAD system. Three different modes of design thinking are presented as ...
BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE lipoprotein(a) [Lp(a)] level is an established risk factor for coronary artery disease and has been implicated in carotid artery disease (CAAD). The relationship between genetic variation in the LPA gene region and CAAD risk remains unknown. METHODS we genotyped single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in the LPAL2, LPA, and PLG regions in 530 individuals with severe CAAD...
Background. Paraoxonase 1 (PON1) enzymatic activity has been consistently predictive of cardiovascular disease, while the genotypes at the four functional polymorphisms at PON1 have not. The goal of this study was to identify additional variation at the PON gene cluster that improved prediction of PON1 activity and determine if these variants predict carotid artery disease (CAAD). Methods. We c...
A 149-amino acid protein designated Cg10062 is encoded by a gene from Corynebacterium glutamicum. The physiological function of Cg10062 is unknown, and the gene encoding this protein has no obvious genomic context. Sequence analysis links Cg10062 to the cis-3-chloroacrylic acid dehalogenase ( cis-CaaD) family, one of the five known families of the tautomerase superfamily. The characterized taut...
We propose a CAAD environment for non-designers. It is a new way to enable effective user participation during the design process. This CAAD environment contains an encapsulation of design knowledge and utilises information filtering as an interface to the design knowledge. Two prototypes are implemented as testbeds. So far, our experience has suggested that the approach has a promising future.
Computer-aided architectural design (CAAD) is the driving force that connects architecture, technology, and [...]
