Global warming has been shown to strongly influence inland water systems, producing noticeable increases in water temperatures. Rising temperatures, especially when combined with widespread nutrient pollution, directly favour the growth of toxic cyanobacteria. Climate changes have also altered natural water level fluctuations increasing the probability of extreme events as dry periods followed ...
The effects of monosulfuron on growth and photosynthetic pigments of the nitrogen-fixing cyanobacterium Anabaena flos-aquae grown exposed to 2000-, 3000-, and 4000-lux light intensity were studied. Exposed to three light intensities, the seven concentrations of monosulfuron tested can significantly inhibit algal growth in a dose-dependent manner. The cell numbers and growth rate were decreased ...
The toxic effects of herbicides (Machete, Saturn) and pesticides (Diazinon and Malathion) on green algae, Scenedesmus obtusiusculus, and cyanobacteria, Anabaena flos aquae, were studied. The results indicated that Machete and Saturn, in comparison to Diazinon and Malathion, were more toxic. On the other hand it was revealed that green algae was more sensitive to the pesticides than the cyanobac...
The physicochemical variables and cyanobacteria of Mid-Cross River, Nigeria, were studied in six stations between March 2005 and August 2006 to determine the relationship between water quality and cyanobacteria abundance. Canonical Correspondence Analysis (CCA) showed that biological oxygen demand (BOD), dissolved oxygen, pH, water velocity, width and depth were important environmental factors ...
Aphanizomenon flos-aquae is a toxic filamentous cyanobacterium that causes water blooms in freshwaters across the globe. We present the draft genome sequence of the A. flos-aquae strain NIES-81, which was determined by 454 pyrosequencing technology. The draft genome is ~5.7 Mb, containing 5,802 predicted protein-coding genes and 58 RNA genes, with a G+C content of 38.5%.
The occurrence of antibiotic residues in the aquatic environment is an emerging concern. In contrast to daphnia and fish, algae are known to be particularly sensitive to antibiotic exposure. However, to date, a systematic evaluation of the sensitivity of different algal species to antibiotics has not been performed. The aim of the present study was therefore to explore the sensitivity of a batt...
Since the gas vesicle protein (GVP) is highly conserved among the different gas-vacuolate prokaryotes, a 29-mer oligonucleotide corresponding to a portion of the Anabaena flos-aquae GVP gene was synthesized and used to isolate the GVP structural gene from Calothrix PCC 7601 (= Fremyella diplosiphon). Gas vacuole production in this filamentous cyanobacterium is restricted to hormogonia which occ...
The taxonomic coherence and phylogenetic relationships of 11 planktonic heterocystous cyanobacterial isolates were examined by investigating two areas of the rRNA operon, the 16S rRNA gene (rrnS) and the internal transcribed spacer (ITS) located between the 16S rRNA and 23S rRNA genes. The rrnS sequences were determined for five strains, including representatives of Anabaena flos-aquae, Aphaniz...
A novel glyceroglycolipid from the nitrogen-fixing cyanobacterium Anabaena flos-aquae F. flos-aquae.
