This paper describes certain properties of the fundamental group of the shrinking wedge of circles. Covering space theory is an inadequate tool since the shrinking wedge of circles is not semi-locally simply connected. We conclude with the fact that the shrinking wedge of circles is not homotopy equivalent to the wedge product of a countable number of circles.

Recruitment of benthic marine invertebrates varies greatly at different spatio–temporal scales. For instance, population dynamics of the yellow clam Mesodesma mactroides at Uruguay exhibit large temporal fluctuations, mainly associated with recruitment. We used data from an 8 yr long-term study to develop an age-structured model to show that density-dependent and densityindependent forces actin...

This work characterizes the efficacy of activated carbon amendment in reducing polychlorinated biphenyl (PCB) bioavailability to clams (Macoma balthica) from field-contaminated sediment (Hunters Point Naval Shipyard, San Francisco Bay, CA, USA). Test methods were developed for the use of clams to investigate the effects of sediment amendment on biological uptake. Sediment was mixed with activat...

In microbial infections, the interaction between microorganisms and phagocytic cells is a crucial determinant in the outcome of the disease process. We used flow cytometry to study the in vitro interactions between Vibrio tapetis, the bacterium responsible for Brown Ring Disease (BRD) in the Manila clam Ruditapes philippinarum, and haemocytes from three bivalve species: the Manila clam (suscept...

Vibrio as one of the main pathogens shellfish diseases can cause serious human seafoodborne gastroenteritis and even death. In this study, we analyzed bacterial communities from clam, compared resistance phenotypes genotypes spp. Meretrix meretrix at different growth stages. High-throughput sequencing analysis revealed predominance Proteobacteria (50%) in community was dominant genera clam hepa...

introduction evaluation of the delivered dose of externally wedged photon beams by external diode dosimeters during the treatment process requires the estimation of exit surface dose correction factors in various wedge angles and field sizes. materials and methods a system of absorbed dose evaluation, using p-type diode dosimeters placed on the exit surface of a phantom, was characterized for e...

The effect of depth displacement of test bars from the induction wedge of the Ponzo illusion was investigated in two experiments. Either two wedges of opposite orientation were presented simultaneously, one at a near and the other at a far distance, or only one wedge was presented at either the near or the far distance. The test bars were stereoscopically either in the plane of the wedge or dis...

Mechanical property and impact resistance mechanism of bionic layered composite was investigated. Due to light weight and high strength property, white clam shell was chosen as bionic model for design of bionic layered composite. The intercoupling model between hard layer and soft layer was identical to the layered microstructure and hardness tendency of the white clam shell, which connected th...

This study aimed to model the habitat suitability for an invasive clam Corbicula fluminea in a coastal shallow lagoon in the southern Neotropical region (-30.22, -50.55). The lagoon (19km2, maximum deep 2.5m) was sampled with an Ekman dredge in an orthogonal matrix comprising 84 points. At each sampling point, were obtained environmental descriptors as depth, organic matter content (OMC), avera...

This work is the first attempt to study growth and some morphological parameters of the clam Ruditapes bruguieri, as well as its habitat preferences. It is found that R. bruguieri lives on bottom sediments including pebble and coarse- and medium-grained sand with a slight admixture of silt. At the study area, this bivalve inhabits sea waters with good aeration, stable oceanic water salinity, an...
