BACKGROUND Insufficient data describe the relationship of hemodynamic parameters to left ventricular (LV) diastolic flow propagation velocity (Vp) measured using color M-mode Doppler echocardiography. METHODS An in vitro LV model used to simulate LV diastolic inflow with Vp measured under conditions of varying: 1) Stroke volume, 2) heart rate (HR), 3) LV volume, 4) LV compliance, and 5) trans...

We present high-resolution compressional wave to shear wave velocity ratios (Vp∕Vs) beneath Kı̄lauea’s summit caldera by applying an in situ estimation method using waveform cross-correlation data for three similar earthquake clusters. We observe high Vp∕Vs ratios (1.832 and 1.852) for two event clusters surrounded by the low background Vp∕Vs value of 1.412 at ∼2.1 km depth below the surface. Th...

OBJECTIVE Hypernasality in velocardiofacial syndrome (VCFS) is more severe, persistent, and difficult to manage compared to other populations with cleft palate or velopharyngeal (VP) dysfunction. This pilot study investigated why children with VCFS have more severe hypernasality. METHODS Pressure-flow methodology indirectly measured VP orifice size and VP closure timing during speech in a gro...

(1) Vasopressin (VP), or antidiuretic hormone, is secreted in response to either increases in plasma osmolality (very sensitive stimulus) or to decreases in plasma volume (less sensitive stimulus). Its normal plasma level is very low (about 1 pg/ml, i.e. 10(-12) M), close to the detection limit of present immunoassays, and distinct antidiuretic effects are observed after infusion of small undet...

The potentiation of corticotropin-releasing factor (CRF)-stimulated cAMP production by vasopressin (VP) in the pituitary cell was investigated by studies on the interaction of CRF, VP, and the protein kinase C activator, phorbol 12-myristate 13-acetate (PMA) on cAMP, adenylate cyclase and phosphodiesterase. Addition of VP or PMA (0.01-100 nM) alone did not alter cellular cAMP content, but marke...

Bcl-2 has been shown to inhibit apoptosis induced by several anticancer agents and to cause a dissociation between etoposide (VP-lot-induced protein-cross-linked DNA strand breaks and VP-16-induced cell death. We suggested previously that VP-16-induced cytotoxicity is mediated by a series of events leading from cleavable complex formation to aberrant UNA recombination, as measured by sister chr...

ventriculoperitoneal (vp) shunt is one of the most common pediatric neurosurgical procedures. it has various complications that may have serious consequences such as shunt dysfunction, and unusual migration. although, migration of shunt catheter to bladder, heart, umbilicus, rectum, pulmonary artery, and stomach has been reported, migration to vagina is a rare one. in this report we present a 1...

Ventriculoperitoneal (VP) shunt insertion may be associated with migration into the abdominal wall, gastrointestinal tract, bladder, vagina, scrotum, and mediastinum. Migration of the VP shunt into the scrotum has been rarely reported. We present a 1 year old boy with cerebrospinal fluid hydrocele due to the migration of a VP shunt catheter into the right side scrotum.

In this study, we determined the borders of the pathogenicity island in V. parahaemolyticus RIMD2210633 (Vp-PAI). Vp-PAI has features in common with Tn7 and other related elements at both terminal ends. Our findings indicate that the mobile element with a transposase which contains the DDE motif may have been involved in Vp-PAI formation.

BACKGROUND Vertebroplasty (VP) and kyphoplasty (KP) are routinely used to treat vertebral body compression fractures (VCFs) resulting from osteoporosis or vertebral body tumors in order to provide rapid pain relief. However, it remains debated whether VP or KP results in superior outcomes versus medical management alone in patients experiencing VCFs. PURPOSE To determine the level of evidence...
