Highly stereoselective chelation-controlled Pd(0)-catalyzed beta-arylations and beta-vinylations of a five-membered chiral, pyrrolidine-based vinyl ether were achieved using aryl- and vinyl chlorides as substrates, yielding quaternary 2-aryl/vinyl-2-methyl cyclopentanones in 89-96% ee under neutral reaction conditions.

1,3-Enynes were easily prepared from coupling between vinyl halides and alkynes or domino coupling of vinyl halides in the presence of copper iodide. The improvement in exposure conditions in the Swedish vinyl chloride producing industry is reported. The article comments on the technology and control methods by which the vinyl chloride concentration has been lowered to less than 1 ppm vinyl chloride. Two epidemiological retrospective cohort studies are presently under way on workers in PVC-utilizing industries and in the rubber industry.

Experiments with volunteers showed that 42% of an inhaled dose of vinyl chloride is retained in the lungs. This value is independent of the concentration of vinyl chloride in the air. Elimination of vinyl chloride through the lungs is negligible since its concentration in expired air decreases immediately after the cessation of exposure.
