Hydrocephalus communicating with the basilar subarachnoid cisterns may manifest itself as enlargement of these spaces. Confirmation of this finding is based on resolution of dilatation after ventricular shunting. A series of eight patients points out the CT characteristics, the differential diagnosis, and the importance of the cisternal ventricle in the transmission of CSF.

CONTEXT Infants born prematurely are at risk for a perinatal encephalopathy characterized by white and gray matter injuries that affect subsequent cortical development and neural connectivity and potentially increase risk for later psychiatric disorder. OBJECTIVE To determine the relation of perinatal brain injury, as detected by neonatal head ultrasound, to psychiatric disorders in adolescen...

We investigated left atrial (LA) function in relation to hypertension using 2-dimensional speckle-tracking echocardiography (STE) in subjects with preserved left ventricular (LV) ejection fraction, while accounting for LA enlargement and LV mass and diastolic function. We performed standard 2-dimensional and Doppler echocardiography and LA volumetric measurements and STE strain imaging in hypert...

Background and Purpose Cerebral magnetic resonance imaging often detects abnormalities whose significance is unknown. The prevalence and correlates of findings such as ventricular enlargement, sulcal widening, and increased white matter signal intensity were examined in 303 men and women aged 65 to 95 years participating in a multicenter study of cardiovascular disease. Methods Cerebral magneti...

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE We compared cranial computed tomography findings among 58 multi-infarct dementia index cases and 74 multi-infarct control subjects without cognitive impairment to identify potential determinants of multi-infarct dementia. METHODS The cranial computed tomography records of acute ischemic stroke patients with a history of multiple cerebral infarcts were compared to determ...

A 20-year-old woman, who was 2 months pregnant, came to the cardiology clinic complaining of exertional dyspnea of 6-months duration. Her chest was clear to auscultation, and the neck veins were modestly elevated. The second heart sound was single and loud. There was no cyanosis or clubbing. A midline sternal scar was noted and was described by the patient as the incision for a heart operation ...

Congestive heart failure is a leading cause of cardiovascular mortality in the United States and Europe.1 Clinically, this syndrome is characterized by water retention and often left ventricular dilatation with poor systolic contractility. Etiologically, congestive heart failure can be of genetic or acquired origin. In 1993, 2 groups independently reported mutations in the cytoskeletal protein ...

The mode of anaesthesia used during pneumoencephalography has a significant effect on the size of the cerebral ventricles 24 hours after the procedure. Post-encephalographic ventricular enlargement is less marked in patients examined under nitrous oxide anaesthesia. This appears to be related to passage of the gas into the ventricles during the encephalogram, and subsequent diffusion outwards. ...

Cardiac abnormalities were identified in patients with familial palmoplantar keratosis. All of them were descended from families on the Greek island of Naxos. Four families were studied and nine cases of palmoplantar keratosis were identified; seven of them showed symptoms and signs of heart disease. Cardiomegaly on chest x ray and electrocardiographic abnormalities were common findings. Three ...
