Epidermal cells from adult guinea pig skin attach and differentiate preferentially on substrates of type IV (basement membrane) collagen, compared to those of types I--III collagen. In contrast, guinea pig dermal fibroblasts attach equally well to all four collagen substrates. Fibronectin mediates the attachment of fibroblasts but not of epidermal cells to collagen.

Excessive collagen deposition may cause abnormal stiffness of the heart during hypertrophy and heart failure. The potent vasoconstrictor angiotensin II seems, via an unknown mechanism, to stimulate collagen production. This study describes the in vitro and ex vivo effects of [Sar(1)]Ang II on collagen production by fibroblasts in culture and in beating, nonworking heart preparations. The effect...

Patients with end-stage liver disease develop acute decompensation (AD) episodes, which become more frequent and might develop into acute-on-chronic liver failure (ACLF). However, it remains unknown how AD induces acceleration of liver disease. We hypothesized that remodeling of collagen type III plays a role in the acceleration of liver cirrhosis after AD and analyzed its formation (Pro-C3) an...

PURPOSE We aimed to observe the effects and mechanism of rhBNP treatment on myocardial fibrosis (MF) after myocardial infarction (MI). METHODS SPF rats were separated into 3 groups: normal, MI (ligation of left coronary artery), and MI + rhBNP (recombinant human brain natriuretic peptide). Rats in MI + rhBNP group were given 30 μg/kg for 2 days before modeling and for 4 weeks after modeling. ...

Collagen immunofluorescence studies were performed on biopsy specimens from 25 patients with cryptogenic fibrosing alveolitis. We studied the relationship of these results to the clinical, radiological, and physiological assessments of disease activity during six-month periods before and after the lung biopsy; to the appearances on routine histological examination; to the inflammatory cell prop...

OBJECTIVE To assess mature burn scars treated with a fractional carbon dioxide laser for changes in histological architecture, type I to III collagen ratios, density of elastic tissue, and subjective measures of clinical improvements. DESIGN Uncontrolled, prospective study of patients with mature burn scars, from a clinical and histological perspective. Biopsy specimens were obtained before a...

Antisense Smad3 adenoviral vectors were used to transfect vascular smooth muscle cells (VSMCs) from rats with balloon injury or infused into the rat balloon-catheter injured carotid arteries, and the role of TGF-β1/Smad3 signaling pathway in the secretion of type I and III collagen by VSMCs following balloon injury was investigated. Antisense Smad3 adenoviral vectors were used to transfect thes...

Tengroth and Ammitzböll found the collagen content of the optic disc in glaucoma to differ from that of normal eyes. A theory was advanced that a primary collagen disturbance might be involved in the pathogenesis of glaucoma. The connective tissue in the body has a supportive function in almost all the organs. The tensile strength and elasticity of connective tissue is mainly due to the presenc...

Collagens type I, II, III, IV, and V and the minor cartilage collagens, 1 alpha 2 alpha 3 alpha, C-PS 1, and C-PS 2, were purified, antibodies raised, and then used in immunofluorescence studies on bovine nasal cartilage (BNC). Punctate localisation was seen with the type II antibody. However, pretreatment of sections with hyaluronidase to remove the proteoglycan resulted in diffuse staining ov...
