Closed tenotomy was used to treat triggering of the fingers and thumb in 54 patients. In 56 digits the method was successful; in seven it was a simple matter to proceed to open tenotomy. With experience, the closed procedure can be completed within minutes without risk of damaging the digital nerves.

The upcoming upgrades to the Large Hadron Collider – the world’s largest particle accelerator – and its associated experiments will require a significant redesign of its triggering electronics, including the implementation of new algorithms in the Regional Calorimeter Trigger (RCT). In this project, I intend to explore two aspects of the implementation of the RCT upgrade: (1) The algorithmic tr...

We examined elbow muscle activities and movement kinematics to determine how subjects combine elementary control actions in performing movements with one and two trajectory segments. In reaching, subjects made a rapid elbow flexion to a visual target before stabilizing the limb with either a low or a higher level of elbow flexor/extensor coactivity (CoA), which was cued by target diameter. Curs...

The term "failure of differentiation" describes the phenotypes of a large number of otherwise unrelated conditions. The six conditions described here (arthrogryposis, camptodactyly, clinodactyly, Madelung deformity, trigger finger, and trigger thumb) are believed to occur because various structures failed to differentiate normally; however, they have neither common features nor a common cause. ...

This study investigates the responses to phasic shoulder retractions or protractions given at different times in the fictive locomotor cycle of the forelimbs of decerebrate cats. Generally, the responses in flexor and extensor muscles acting at the shoulder or elbow were bilaterally coordinated according to a negative feedback scheme. Perturbations in the direction of the movements that would h...

Optical and near-infrared observations of the GRB990705 error box were carried out with ESO telescopes at La Silla and Paranal in Chile and with the NOAO SPIREX 0.6-meter telescope in Antarctica. We detected the counterpart of this GRB in the near-infrared H band and optical V band. The power-law decline of the near-infrared lightcurve is rather steep with a decay index α ≃ 1.7 in the first hou...

Obesity is a chronic relapsing disease requiring a similar long term approach to management as that of other chronic conditions. Management needs to be multifaceted aiming to achieve sustainable behavioural changes to physical activity and diet to alter the patient and family microenvironment to one favouring better weight control. A range of therapies including specific diets, calorie counting...

Surgical treatment of a flexor tendon lesion of the hand is followed by a 6-week period of dynamic immobilisation. This is achieved by the elastic strings of a Kleinert splint, enabling only passive and no active flexor movements. After such immobilisation, the appearance of a temporary clumsy hand indicates decreased efficiency of cerebral motor control. Using PET we identified the recruitment...

Although steady progress has been made on developing vision-based gesture recognition systems, state-of-the-art approaches are still limited to discriminate hand configurations with high amounts of finger occlusions, a common scenario in most fingerspelling alphabets. In this article, we propose a novel method for recognition of isolated fingerspelling gestures based on depth edge features. Our...

Description of a novel method to perform continuous irrigation for flexor tenosynovitis in a way that is comfortable for the patient and convenient for nursing staff by placing the hand in the suction pouch of a lithotomy style drape attached to wall suction.
