Tinea capitis caused by Trichophyton tonsurans has been increasing in the United States for the past 25 years. A retrospective study of dermatophyte culture data at the University of California, San Francisco, and a parallel study of patient visits for tinea capitis at an affiliated hospital demonstrates a dramatic rise in Trichophyton tonsurans tinea capitis in the San Francisco Bay area.
Onychomycosis is a common adult human mycosis, and dermatophytes of the Trichophyton genera are the most common causative agent. Many antimycotic agents are safe and highly effective for the treatment of dermatophytosis, and are available for clinical practice. Successful treatment depends on the ability of antifungal drugs to eradicate the fungal isolates. The aim of this work was to determine...
The effects of several physical and chemical agents on the survival of Trichophyton mentagrophytes arthrospores were investigated. Although arthrospores of this dermatophyte were highly resistant to chilling and freezing, they were extremely susceptible to moderate heat (above 50 degrees C) and desiccation. This high susceptibility could be significantly reduced when they were dried in the pres...
Seven species of Microsporum, 4 of Trichophyton and 1 Epidermophyton including 55 species belonging to 33 genera were studied for extracellular keratinase. The preliminary screening was done as their ability to develop clearing zone formation. The keratinase of Microsporum species ranged from 50-300ku/ml and of Trichophyton 100-140ku/ml while that of Epidermophyton was 20ku/ml.
Eighteen plant extracts from nine traditional Mexican medicinal plants were tested for antifungal activity against two dermatophyte fungal species (Trichophyton mentagrophytes and Trichophyton rubrum), one non-dermatophyte (Aspergillus niger), and one yeast (Candida albicans). The strongest effect was manifested by the hexane extracts from Eupatorium aschenbornianum and Sedum oxypetalum, as wel...
the effect of onion and garlic extracts on fungal growth and keratinolytic activity was studied in trichophyton mentagrophytes as one of the major etiologic agents of human and animal dermatophytosis in iran and other parts of the world. in order to find out the best keratinase producer for further steps, culture conditions for 30 strains of t. mentagrophytes isolated from human dermatophytosis...
One strain of Trichophyton rubrum CMCC(F)T1i (=CBS 139224) isolated from onychomycosis and one strain of Trichophyton violaceum CMCC(F)T3l (=CBS 141829) isolated from tinea capitis in China were whole-genome sequenced by Illumina/Solexa, while the former was also sequenced by Pacific Biosciences sequencing in parallel.
The unusual attribution of trace amounts of ochratoxin A in some Chinese food commodities to Penicillium polonicum is questioned by European experience in searches for ochratoxinogenic food-spoilage Penicillia, where mistaken attribution is now known to have been due to cryptic Penicillium verrucosum contamination. Consequently, selection of single-spore isolates is recommended as pre-requisite...
Trichophyton rubrum is the main agent causing dermatophytosis (1). Keratinocytes are considered to be the first physical barrier of defense against pathogens (2). But not only a physical barrier. They recognize antigens through Toll like receptors (TLR) (3). The activation of this TLR, present on the surface of the keratinocytes, induce the expression of different pro-inflammatory cytokines, co...
