The interleukin 28B (IL-28B) rs12979860 C/T polymorphism is a predictor of spontaneous and treatment-induced hepatitis C virus (HCV) clearance. The C/C genotype is associated with higher serum cholesterol, predictor of a favorable outcome in chronic hepatitis C. Whether IL-28B polymorphism and serum cholesterol play a role in modulating the history of mild hepatitis C is unknown. To clarify thi...

BACKGROUND Exposure to chemotherapeutic agents such as acetaminophen may lead to serious liver injury. Calcium deregulation, angiotensin II production and xanthine oxidase activity are suggested to play mechanistic roles in such injury. OBJECTIVE This study evaluates the possible protective effects of the calcium channel blocker amlodipine, the angiotensin converting enzyme inhibitor lisinopr...

BACKGROUND One of the features associated with pre-eclampsia is elevated liver transaminases. The reason this happens has not been fully described. However, the hepatocytes are not known to be spared by free radical injury. This study was conducted to examine the relationship between product of free radical injury (malondialdehyde) and transaminases in pre-eclamptic women. PATIENTS AND METHOD...

the anti-apoptotic gene bcl-2 is located in mitochondria, but it is uncertain whether its expression affects hepatocyte survival in ischemia/reperfusion (i/r) injury. this experiment was designed to evaluate the role of folic acid in expression of bcl-2 in i/r in rat liver. eighteen wister rats were divided into sham-operated controlgroup (c) (n=6), i/r group (n=6), folic acid treated group whi...

INTRODUCTION Infective mononucleosis is most commonly caused by Epstein-Barr virus (EBV), and in smaller percentage by cytomegalovirus (CMV). OBJECTIVE The aim of this paper was to determine the clinical and laboratory differences between EBV and CMV infectious mononucleosis in children. METHODS Cohort retrospective analytical research was conducted. We used data from medical history in six...

Background: Multiple biochemical parameters related to cytolysis, cholestasis and/or liver failure, can be used to evaluate liver tolerance to antiretroviral (ARV) drugs. What parameters are most suitable for monitoring early hepatic tolerance in the developing countries? Objective: To evaluate liver tolerance to NVP (nevirapine) or EFV (efavirenz)based regimens during the first six months. Met...

Background: Paracetamol (APAP) is the most famous drug used in the world to relieve of pain and used as an antipyretic. Paracetamol overdose induces liver damage and is a well known hepatotoxic drug. This study was aimed to determine the incidence of acidosis in acetaminophen overdose with the time of NAcetyl Cystiene (NAC) administration and correlation of late acidosis and death in acetaminop...

Isoflurane is less hepatotoxic than its predecessors, halothane and enflurane. We present a 68-year-old man who developed fulminant and fatal hepatic necrosis two days after open cholecystectomy done under isoflurane anesthesia. Laboratory findings included grossly elevated transaminases and bilirubin and prolonged prothrombin time. Serological studies were negative for viral hepatitis. Postmor...

ω-Transaminases display complicated inhibitions by ketone products and both enantiomers of amine substrates. Here, we report the first example of ω-transaminase devoid of such inhibitions. Owing to the lack of enzyme inhibitions, the ω-transaminase from Ochrobactrum anthropi enabled efficient kinetic resolution of α-methylbenzylamine (500 mM) even without product removal.
