Protein loss leading to reduced lean body mass is recognized to contribute to the high levels of morbidity and mortality seen in critical illness. This prospective, randomized, controlled study compared the effects of conventional parenteral nutrition (TPN), glutamine-supplemented (0.4 g.kg-1.day-1) TPN (TPNGLN), and TPNGLN with combined growth hormone (GH, 0.2 IU.kg-1.day-1) and IGF-I (160 mic...

Glucagon-like peptide-2 (GLP-2) is an intestinal trophic enteroendocrine peptide that is associated with intestinal adaptation following resection. Herein, we investigate the effects of GLP-2 in a total parenteral nutrition (TPN)-supported model of experimental short bowel syndrome. Juvenile Sprague-Dawley rats underwent a 90% small intestinal resection and jugular catheter insertion. Rats were...

OBJECTIVE To evaluate the role of glutamine-supplemented total parenteral nutrition (TPN) in severe acute pancreatitis. PATIENTS AND METHODS Forty-seven patients with severe acute pancreatitis were admitted to Huaihe Hospital, China, over a period of one year (July 2013 to June 2014) were randomly divided into two therapeutic groups. Patients in group 1 (24 patients in total) and group 2 (23 ...

In this paper a parametric description for the state space of an arbitrary TPN is given. An enumerative procedure for reducing the state space is introduced. The reduction is defined as a truncated multistage decision problem and solved recursively. A reachability graph is defined in a discrete way by using the reachable integer-states of the TPN.

Total parenteral nutrition (TPN) is an essential means of maintaining nutrition in those who are unable to do so via an enteral route. However, long term TPN can pose potentially serious complications, in particular liver related damage. This article describes a case of abnormal liver function following total parenteral nutrition and discusses the methods of potentially reducing such complicati...

Light-exposed parenteral multivitamins induce in lungs peroxide-like oxidant responses as well as the initiation of fibrosis. We hypothesized that peroxides generated in light-exposed total parenteral nutrition (TPN) affect lung remodeling. The objective was to assess the specific roles of peroxides, multivitamin preparation (MVP), and light exposure on lung remodeling during TPN. Three-day-old...

OBJECTIVE Glutamine (Gln)-supplemented total parenteral nutrition (TPN) improves clinical outcome after planned surgery, but the benefits of Gln-TPN for critically ill (intensive care unit; ICU) patients are still debated. DESIGN Prospective, double-blind, controlled, randomized trial. SETTING ICUs in 16 hospitals in France. PATIENTS One-hundred fourteen ICU patients admitted for multiple...

We examined the impact of infection on hepatic and muscle glucose metabolism in dogs adapted to chronic total parenteral nutrition (TPN). Studies were done in five conscious chronically catheterized dogs, in which sampling (artery, portal and hepatic vein, and iliac vein), infusion catheters (inferior vena cava), and Transonic flow probes (hepatic artery, portal vein, and iliac artery) were imp...

INTRODUCTION Liver dysfunction associated with artificial nutrition in critically ill patients is a complication that seems to be frequent, but it has not been assessed previously in a large cohort of critically ill patients. METHODS We conducted a prospective cohort study of incidence in 40 intensive care units. Different liver dysfunction patterns were defined: (a) cholestasis: alkaline pho...
