We are developing design principles applying tangible interfaces to storytelling. This paper describes an underlying philosophy and three resultant designs for computer-mediated toys, exploring how the merging of physical objects with computer technology can enhance children’s storytelling. Each prototype aims to develop a specific set of both oral and written storytelling skills, as well as co...
In this paper, we discuss the applicat[ons ant! implications of the Programmable Brick-s-s tiny, portable computer embecfded ~nside a LE~Q'J brick, capable of interacting with the phys!cal world in a large variety of ways. We describe how Programmable Bricks make possible a wide range of new design activities for children, and we discuss experiences in using Programmable Bricks in three types o...
A total of 45 children's toys and jewelry were tested for total and bioaccessible metal concentrations. Total As, Cd, Sb, Cr, Ni, and Pb concentrations were 0.22-19, 0.01-139, 0.1-189, 0.06-846, 0.14-2894 and 0.08-860,000 mg kg(-1). Metallic products had the highest concentrations, with 3-7 out of 13 samples exceeding the European Union safety limit for Cd, Pb, Cr, or Ni. However, assessment ba...
Dynamic spatial indexing is the ability to encode, remember, and track the location of complex events. For example, in a previous study, 6-month-old infants were familiarized to a toy making a particular sound in a particular location, and later they fixated that empty location when they heard the sound presented alone (Journal of Experimental Psychology: General, 2004, Vol. 133, pp. 46-62). Th...
We present a list of Chemicals Concern (CoCs) in plastic toys. started from available studies reporting chemical composition toys to group materials, as well gather mass fractions and function chemicals these materials. Chemical emissions subsequent human exposures were then estimated using series models coupled near-field far-field exposure assessment framework. Comparing doses with reference ...
Recent years have seen a growing interest in the ethics of sex robots, fuelled by technology industry's ability to build better and robots that can be used as toys (such realdoll.com). Although pros cons been discussed for several philosophy technology, only few contributions focussed on child robots. None these prior essays examined Kantian approach question whether one should allow people use...
DO STORYBOOKS REALLY BREAK CHILDREN’S GENDER STEREOTYPES? Gender stereotypes—the features and characteristics assigned to men and women in a particular society—are prevalent in children as young as the preschool years (Martin and Ruble, 2004). For example, preschoolers can categorize toys as appropriate for either girls (e.g., dishset) or boys (e.g., toolset), and play with them according to ge...
Gordon Liljestrand is credited with establishing modern nuclear cardiology as a noninvasive imaging modality in 1939.1 Table summarizes major technological advancements in myocardial perfusion imaging over the past 70 years that have led to more accurate assessment of coronary artery disease (CAD). Most of these technical advances have involved radioisotopes and computer software. Camera hardwa...
BACKGROUND Symptom- and sexual history-based testing i.e., testing on indication, for anorectal sexually transmitted infections (STIs) in women is common. Yet, it is unknown whether this strategy is effective. Moreover, little is known about alternative transmission routes i.e. by fingers/toys. This study assesses anorectal STI prevalence and infections missed by current testing practice, there...
