The marrow iron reserves, automated red cell indices, serum iron, and total iron binding capacity of 69 geriatric patients were recorded. A fall in the mean red cell volume (MCV) to between 71 and 82 fl failed to distinguish between iron deficiency and the 'anaemia of chronic disorders'. However, there was no reserve of marrow iron in the eight patients with an MCV of 70 fl or less.

Patients with colorectal carcinoma showed statistically significant lower values of transferrin saturation, total iron binding capacity and serum iron level as compared with control group, while the level of ferritin and the size of labile iron pool in carcinoma patients were higher, although this difference was not statistically significant. Our observations are in favour of the hypothesis whi...

The prevalence of iron depletion, iron deficient erythropoiesis (IDE), and iron deficiency anemia (IDA) was assessed in preschool Inuit children using soluble transferrin receptor (sTfR) and traditional indicators of iron status while disregarding or taking inflammation into account when defining SF cutoffs. Iron depletion was defined as follows: (1) SF < 15 μg/L regardless of the C-reactive pr...

Iron is transported throughout the body as part of the transferrin protein and is stored as ferritin. The earliest stage of iron deficiency occurs when stores are depleted, characterized by a drop in serum ferritin levels and an increase in total iron binding capacity that refers to incomplete saturation of the transferrin molecule. Serum ferritin levels below 12 μg/l are associated with comple...

Introduction: Deficiencies in micronutrients are a major health issue in all ages , especially children, in developing countries. Severe or long-term iron deficiency will lead to iron deficiency anemia and thus affect children’s growth and development. This review article tried to determine the neurodevelopmental effects of deficiency in this micronutrient among children. Methods: A compr...

[1] Owing to the difficulties inherent in measuring trace metals and the importance of iron as a limiting nutrient for biological systems, the ability to monitor particulate iron concentration remotely is desirable. This study examines the relationship between labile particulate iron, described here as weak acid leachable particulate iron or total dissolvable iron, and easily obtained bio-optic...

1. The effect of iron chelators on iron uptake, ferritin and total protein synthesis was studied in cultured Chang cells. Desferrioxamine depressed ferritin synthesis and completely inhibited iron uptake by ferritin protein. Rhodotorulic acid reduced iron uptake by the cells but had little effect on ferritin synthesis. Diethylenetriamine pentaacetic acid produced complete inhibition of iron upt...

OBJECTIVE To investigate haematological variations and iron related changes in the serum of participants in a 1600 kilometre ultramarathon run. PARTICIPANTS Seven male and two female participants in a 1600 km foot race. METHODS Blood samples were obtained from the participants before, after four and 11 days of running, and at the end of the event. Samples were analysed by standard methods f...

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE Brain iron overload plays a detrimental role in brain injury after intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH). A recent study found that minocycline acts as an iron chelator and reduces iron-induced neuronal death in vitro. The present study investigated if minocycline reduces iron overload after ICH and iron-induced brain injury in vivo. METHODS This study was divided into 4 parts...

It is well known that iron overload can result in pancreatic iron deposition, beta-cell destruction, and diabetes in humans. Recent studies in animals have extended the link between iron status and pancreatic function by showing that iron depletion confers protection against beta-cell dysfunction and diabetes. The aim of the present study was to identify genes in the pancreas that are different...
