A high performance three-dimensional (3D) thiophene-annulated perylene dye, namely tetra-PBI-S, was designed and synthesized. The appropriate LUMO level, balanced carrier mobilities and favourable phase separation make tetra-PBI-S based solar cells show a much higher power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 6.2% than tetra-PBI based solar cells with a PCE of 3.6%.

With a view to combining the desirable electronic and photochemical properties of hexabenzocoronene (HBC) and the C-C bond forming capabilities of thiophenes, 1-(3-thienyl)-2,3,4,5,6-penta(4-tert-butyl-phenyl)benzene (1) was oxidised using FeCl(3). The resulting products, superaromatic thiophene (2) and its 5,5'-dimer (3), are S-HBC systems and provide a new pair of spectral comparators.

Two novel metal-free organic dyes containing thienothiophene and thiophene segments have been synthesized. Nano-crystalline TiO2 dye-sensitized solar cells were fabricated using these dyes as light-harvesting sensitizers, and a high solar energy-to-electricity conversion efficiency of 6.23% was achieved.

We report a new class of anthracene-thiophene-based copolymers, PAT4. The UV-vis absorption spectrum of PAT4 was broad and covered the full range of the solar spectrum. The hole mobility of PAT4 was high, up to 0.037 cm(2) V(-1) s(-1). PAT4-based organic solar cells showed promising power conversion efficiencies of 1.7%.
