The first example of arylboronic acid catalyzed [4 + 3] cycloaddition reaction is reported. 3,5-Bis-(trifluoromethyl) phenylboronic acid is shown to be the best catalyst in this reaction. The method has also enabled the preparation of cyclohepta[b]benzofurans and cyclohepta[b]indoles in excellent yields.

Eburicoic acid was produced and isolated from the cultured mycelia of the fungus, Trametes versatillis. The weight rate of eburicoic acid in the dry weight of cultured mycelia of Trametes versatillis was about to 1%. Trametes versatillis can be expected as an important bioresource to supply eburicoic acid for its industrial exploitation.

THE TITLE COMPOUND (SYSTEMATIC NAME rac-3,3,3-trifluoro-2-hy-droxy-propanoic acid), C3H3F3O3, is a fluorinated derivative of lactic acid. The O=C-C-O(H) torsion angle is 13.26 (15)°. In the crystal, O-H⋯O hydrogen bonds and C-H⋯O contacts connect the mol-ecules into sheets perpendicular to the c axis.
