An iron(iii) complex bearing a cross-bridged cyclam ligand (4,11-dimethyl-1,4,8,11-tetraazabicyclo[6.6.2]hexadecane) is an efficient catalyst for the oxidation of both water and alcohols using sodium periodate as the oxidant. In catalytic water oxidation a maximum turnover number (TON) of 1030 is achieved, while in catalytic alcohol oxidation >95% conversions and yields can be obtained.

The antigenic properties of Bacillus subtilis flagella and periodate-treated flagellin were compared by using immobilization-inhibition and diethylaminoethyl cellulose binding assay. The results suggest that there are both unique and cross-reactive antibodies elicited by B. subtilis flagella and flagellin.

Flavonoid-bearing probes have been designed and synthesized to explore their ability to selectively capture target proteins or biosynthetic enzymes under oxidative activation. A proof-of-concept study using biotinylated (epi)catechin-bearing affinity-based probes herein demonstrates the ability of these probes to capture the LDOX flavonoid enzyme using sodium periodate as the oxidant.

Ribosomes containing 5S RNA in which the 3'-terminus has been modified chemically, either by periodate oxidation or by conversion of the terminal ribose to a morpholine derivative, are fully as active in peptidebond formation and polypeptide synthesis as those ribosomes with unmodified 5S RNA. These results exclude models for protein synthesis in which peptidyl-5S RNA is formed as an intermediate.

The catalytic water-oxidation activity of Wilkinson's iridium acetate trimer (1) has been characterized electrochemically and by using chemical oxidants. We show that 1 can function as an operationally homogeneous water-oxidation catalyst when driven with sodium periodate as a primary oxidant, but rapidly decomposes using Ce(IV) as a primary oxidant.

A substance which was mitogenic for murine B lymphocytes in the presence of 2-mercaptoethanol was isolated from agar. Stimulating activity of this material was stable to proteolysis or protein denaturants but was destroyed by periodate treatment. Agar-derived mitogen stimulation was distinct from that obtained with dextran sulfate or lipopolysaccharide and may define different populations of B ...

A microtiter plate assay for UDP-galactopyranose mutase, an essential cell wall biosynthetic enzyme of Mycobacterium tuberculosis, was developed. The assay is based on the release of tritiated formaldehyde from UDP-galactofuranose but not UDP-galactopyranose by periodate and was used to identify a uridine-based enzyme inhibitor from a chemical library.

The direct coupling of the carboxylic derivative of steroids to the amino group of enzymes is a well-established method in steroid enzyme immunoassays for making enzyme conjugates (1). Horseradish peroxidase (HRP), containing six lysine residues in the sequence, is a widely used enzyme in enzyme immunoassays; in practice, however , only one or two of these are generally available for reaction (...
