We survey recent results on the behavior of the Black-Scholes implied volatility at extreme strikes. There are simple and universal formulae that give quantitative links between tail behavior and moment explosions of the underlying on one hand, and growth of the famous volatility smile on the other hand. Some original results are included as well.

The second moment based independent component analysis scheme of Molgedey and Schuster is generalized to fractional low order moments, relevant for linear mixtures of heavy tail stable processes. The Molgedey and Schuster algorithm stands out by allowing explicitly construction of the independent components. Surpricingly, this tums out to be possible also for decorrelation based on fractional l...

Mechanisms whereby acid reflux may accelerate the progression from Barrett's esophagus (BE) to esophageal adenocarcinoma (EA) are not fully understood. Acid and reactive oxygen species (ROS) have been reported to cause DNA damage in Barrett's cells. We have previously shown that NADPH oxidase NOX5-S is responsible for acid-induced H2O2 production in Barrett's cells and in EA cells. In this stud...

In this paper, the roll and pitch dynamics of a biologically inspired quadruped water runner robot are analyzed, and a stable robot design is proposed and tested. The robot’s foot–water interaction force is derived using drag equations. Roll direction instability is attributed to a small roll moment of inertia and large instantaneous roll moments generated by the foot–water interaction forces. ...

The examination of caecal contents allows one to investigate the exposure of colon mucosa to dietary toxins and the chemical contaminants present in animal feed. The objective of the present study was to examine the influence of Fusarium mycotoxins (zearalenone, ZEN, and deoxynivalenol, DON), administered separately and as a mixture, on the genotoxicity of caecal water (CW) from gilts fed these...

Genotoxicity and carcinogenicity testing of pharmaceuticals prior to commercialization is requested by regulatory agencies. The bacterial mutagenicity test was considered having the highest accuracy of carcinogenic prediction. However, some evidences suggest that it always results in false-positive responses when the bacterial mutagenicity test is used to predict carcinogenicity. Along with maj...

This review provides a compendium of retrievable results of genotoxicity and carcinogenicity assays performed on marketed gastrointestinal drugs. Of the 71 drugs considered, 38 (53.5%) do not have retrievable data, whereas the other 33 (46.5%) have at least one genotoxicity or carcinogenicity test result. Of these 33 drugs, 15 tested positive in at least one genotoxicity assay and 13 in at leas...

ionizing radiation causes dna damage and chromosome abbreviations on normal cells. the radioprotective effect of celecoxib (clx) was investigated against genotoxicity induced by ionizing radiation in cultured human blood lymphocytes. peripheral blood samples were collected from human volunteers and were incubated at different concentrations at 1, 5, 10 and 50 μm of clx for two hours. at each do...

Background and purpose: Several techniques with different sensitivity to single-strand breaks and/or double strand breaks were applied to detect DNA breaks generated by high LET particles. Tests that assess DNA damage in single cells might be the appropriate tool to estimate damage induced by particles, facilitating the assessment of heterogeneity of damage in a cell population. The microgel el...

Homeopathic drugs have been evaluated for their suitable candidature as potent antimalarials. However, the exact mode of action, of these homeopathic remedies still remains a matter of conjecture. This study aims to evaluate the efficacy of potentized homeopathic antimalarials on the integrity of the DNA of Plasmodium berghei (ANKA strain), in erythrocytes of Swiss albino mice. Short term in vi...
