The genus Nocardia has undergone rapid taxonomic expansion in recent years, and an increasing number of species are recognized as human pathogens. Many established species have predictable antimicrobial susceptibility profiles, but sufficient information is often not available for recently described organisms. Additionally, the effectiveness of sulfonamides as first-line drugs for Nocardia has ...

Antimicrobial therapy is an important tool in reducing the enormous losses in the poultry industry caused by Escherichia coli infections (colibacillosis). However, resistance to existing antimicrobials is widespread and of concern to poultry veterinarians. Antimicrobial resistance testing of 468 avian E. coli strains isolated in Spain showed very high levels of resistance to trimethoprim-sulfam...

Fifty patients with exacerbations of chronic bronchitis were treated with either a combination of trimethoprim 320 mg. and sulphamethoxazole 1,600 mg. a day or ampicillin 2 g. a day. The trial, carried out as a single-blind procedure, showed that the combination was more effective as judged by clinical response and reduction in sputum volume and purulence, with eradication of pathogenic organis...

Very little is known about the use of antibiotics on small dairy farms in lower/middle-income countries. The use of these drugs can have profound impacts on animal health, farmer income and public health. A survey of 156 farmers was conducted in Cajamarca, a major dairy-producing center in the highlands of Peru characterized by small farms (<15 cows) to assess patterns and determinants of antib...

Emerging antimicrobial resistance among uropathogens makes the management of acute uncomplicated cystitis increasingly challenging. Few prospective data are available on the risk factors for resistance to trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole (TMP-SMX), the drug of choice in most settings. In order to evaluate this, we prospectively enrolled women 18 to 50 years of age presenting to an urban primary ca...

The purpose of the study reported here was to compare the bactericidal effectiveness of tetracycline and co-trimoxazole (a combination of sulfamethoxazole and trimethoprim) in treating cholera. The study, an open-ended random trial using adult patients with cholera cases confirmed by stool culture, was carried out in March 1993 at the Cholera Treatment Unit (CTU) of the Hospital de Apoyo Depart...

CONTEXT: Paracoccidioidomycosis is a systemic form of mycosis that spreads hematogenously, secondarily to reactivation of lung infection or infection at another site or to new exposure to the causative agent. Few cases of bone involvement have been reported in the literature and involvement of the spine is extremely rare. CASE REPORT: We describe a case of a 68-year-old male patient with spon...

Primary cutaneous infections with Nocardia asteroides are rare and have been reported in immunocompromised patients. Herein, we report a case of primary cutaneous Nocardia asteroides mycetoma of the skin in an immunocompetent individual. The infection was treated successfully with trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole. Because a prolonged incubation time is required for the cultures and since additiona...

Thirty-three Salmonella enterica serovar Typhi blood isolates from Lima, Peru (2008 to 2012), were fully susceptible to trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole, chloramphenicol, ceftriaxone, and tetracycline; 8/33 (24.2%) showed intermediate susceptibility to ciprofloxacin carrying mutations in the quinolone resistance-determining region of the gyrA gene (Ser83-Phe and Asp87-Asn) and in the gyrB gene (Se...

A clinical case of a patient bearing systemic paracoccidioidomycosis with regional ganglionic and oral exposure and later pulmonary involvement is presented. The patient was treated with specific drugs (amphotericin B, itraconazole, sulfamethoxazole-trimethoprim) and followed throughout a 6-year period and eventually died showing an extensive involvement of the central nervous system.
