The basics of neutrino oscillations is presented. Existing evidences of neutrino oscillations, obtained in the atmospheric and solar neutrino experiments, are considered. The new CHOOZ bound on the element |Ue3| 2, obtained from the three-neutrino analysis of the data, is discussed. Decoupling of neutrino oscillations in the solar neutrino range of ∆m2 is considered.
The reality of neutrino oscillations has not really sunk in yet. The phenomenon presents us with purely quantum mechanical effects over macroscopic time and distance scales (milliseconds and 1000s of km). In order to help with the pedagogical difficulties this poses, I attempt here to present the physics in words and pictures rather than math. No disrespect is implied by the title; I am merely ...
Using the Mandelstam-Tamm method we derive time-energy uncertainty relations for neutrino oscillations. We demonstrate that the small energy uncertainty of antineutrinos in a recently considered experiment with recoilless resonant (Mössbauer) production and absorption of tritium antineutrinos is in conflict with the energy uncertainty which, according to the time-energy uncertainty relation, is...
These lectures describe some aspects of the physics of massive neutrinos. After a brief introduction of neutrinos in the Standard Model, I discuss possible patterns for their masses. In particular, I show how the presence of a large Majorana mass term for the right-handed neutrinos can engender tiny neutrino masses for the observed neutrinos. If neutrinos have mass, different flavors of neutrin...
The approximated tri-bimaximal mixing (TBM) observed in the ν oscillations is a particular feature of a class of models characterized by the spontaneously broken horizontal flavour symmetry A4. In this paper, it is presented an analysis on the predictions of these models for relevant low-energy observables. In an effective operator approach, these effects are dominated by dim-6 operators, suppr...
We explain the mechanism that elicits the mixed mode oscillations (MMOs) and the subprimary firing range that we recently discovered in mouse spinal motoneurons. In this firing regime, high-frequency subthreshold oscillations appear a few millivolts below the spike voltage threshold and precede the firing of a full blown spike. By combining intracellular recordings in vivo (including dynamic cl...
BACKGROUND Simple models of insect populations with non-overlapping generations have been instrumental in understanding the mechanisms behind population cycles, including wild (chaotic) fluctuations. The presence of deterministic chaos in natural populations, however, has never been unequivocally accepted. Recently, it has been proposed that the application of chaos control theory can be useful...
Recent theoretical claims not withstanding, muons can and do oscillate. Muons produced in association with neutrinos (if masses and mixing angles are nonzero) exhibit a joint oscillating spatial distribution. The possible use of muon oscillations as a probe of neutrino mass and mixing parameters is discussed using very simple physical arguments. Space-time oscillations in the secondary decay ve...
Evidences in favor of neutrino oscillations, obtained in the solar and atmospheric neutrino experiments, are discussed. Neutrino oscillations in the solar and atmospheric ranges of the neutrino masssquared differences are considered in the framework of the minimal scheme with the mixing of three massive neutrinos. There exist at present convincing evidences of neutrino oscillations obtained in ...
