We present a new technique, which we call ‘texture unmapping’, and its application to image reconstruction. A parametric model of an image is made, and then subtracted from the image to leave a non-parametric component. The two components may then be reconstructed independently and then recombined to give a final reconstruction. Results of the new technique are given on a range of images.

Statistical parametric mapping (SPM) locates significant clusters based on a ratio of signal to noise (a 'contrast' of the parameters divided by its standard error) meaning that very low noise regions, for example outside the brain, can attain artefactually high statistical values. Similarly, the commonly applied preprocessing step of Gaussian spatial smoothing can shift the peak statistical si...

The standard template provided with the statistical software package SPM’99 was originally developed for O-H2O PET scans in resting condition with eyes closed. This template is commonly applied regardless of the tracer actually used in the scans being analyzed. This work studies the effect of three different normalization templates in the outcome of the statistical analyses of PET scans, as com...

OBJECTIVE A voxel based investigation of cerebral blood flow was conducted to identify brain functional differences during resting state between children with developmental language disorder (DLD) and normal controls. METHOD Using DSM-IV criteria, we selected 21 children with DLD. All children were examined by technetium-99m-HMPAO Brain SPECT. Using SPM analyses, we compared the SPECT images ...

PURPOSE Frontal lobe epilepsy is a common epileptic disorder and is characterized by recurring seizures that arise in the frontal lobes. The purpose of this study is to identify the epileptogenic regions and other abnormal regions in patients with left frontal lobe epilepsy (LFLE) based on the magnetoencephalogram (MEG), and to understand the effects of clinical variables on brain activities in...

UNLABELLED BACKGROUND Statistical parametric mapping (SPM) procedure is an objective tool to analyze 18F-fluoro-2-deoxy-d-glucose-positron-emission tomography (FDG-PET) images and a useful complement to visual analysis. However, SPM requires a comparison to control data set that cannot be obtained in healthy children for ethical reasons. Using adults as controls showed some limitations. The ...

In typical statistical parametric mapping (SPM) of fMRI data, the functional data are pre-smoothed using a Gaussian kernel to reduce noise at the cost of losing spatial specificity. Wavelet approaches have been incorporated in such analysis by enabling an efficient representation of the underlying brain activity through spatial transformation of the original, un-smoothed data; a successful fram...

The purpose of this study is to assess the clinical value of spatiotemporal source analysis for analyzing ictal magnetoencephalography (MEG). Ictal MEG and simultaneous scalp EEG was recorded in five patients with medically intractable frontal lobe epilepsy. Dynamic statistical parametric maps (dSPMs) were calculated at the peak of early ictal spikes for the purpose of estimating the spatiotemp...

We present a framework for pose-invariant face recognition using parametric linear subspace models as stored representations of known individuals. Each model can be t to an input, resulting in faces of known people whose head pose is aligned to the input face. The model's continuous nature enables the pose alignment to be very accurate, improving recognition performance, while its generalizatio...
