We present Chandra X-ray observations of the radio-quiet QSO PG 2302+029. This quasar has a rare system of ultra-high velocity (−56, 000 km s) UV absorption lines that form in an outflow from the active nucleus (Jannuzi et al. 2003). The Chandra data indicate that soft X-ray absorption is also present. We perform a joint UV and X-ray analysis, using photoionization calculations, to detemine the...

We report on the analysis of an X-ray grating spectrum of the Classical Nova V382 Vel (1999), obtained with the LETG+HRC-S instrument on board CHANDRA, which shows emission lines dominating over any continuum. C are identified, but no Fe lines are detected. The total luminosity in the lines is ∼ 4 × 10 27 erg s −1 (corrected for N H = 1.2 × 10 21 cm −2). The lines have broad profiles with FWHM ...

Observations of the November 1995 Sun crossing of the Saturn’s ring-plane made with the 3.6m CFH telescope, using the UHAO adaptive optics system, are presented here. We report the detection of four arcs located in the vicinity of the F ring. They can be seen one day later in HST images. The combination of both data sets gives accurate determinations of their orbits. Semimajor axes range from 1...

In response to contamination from the recent Fukushima nuclear accident, we conducted radionuclide analysis on bamboos sampled from six sites within a 25 to 980 km radius of the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant. Maximum activity concentrations of radiocesium (134)Cs and (137)Cs in samples from Fukushima city, 65 km away from the Fukushima Daiichi plant, were in excess of 71 and 79 kBq/kg, ...

Understanding strong ground motions in the near-fault areas is important for seismic risk assessment in densely populated areas. In the past, lack of information on strong ground motion for large and moderate earthquakes led to the use of mainly far field large and moderate earthquake records in equations for calculation of the strong ground motion parameters. In this article, we collected and ...

High resolution images obtained with the Arecibo radar system at a wavelength of 12.6 centimeters reveal numerous parallel 10to 20-kilometer-wide bands of high radar backscatter situated on and oriented parallel to the major mountain ranges of the Ishtar Terra region of Venus. Geometric and morphological characteristics suggest that the bands represent Earth-like tectonic deformational features...

We examine the gravitational redshift of radiation emitted from within the potential of a cluster. Spectral lines from the intracluster medium (ICM) are redshifted in proportion to the emission-weighted mean potential along the line of sight, amounting to approximately 50 km s-1 at a radius of 100 kpc h-1, for a cluster dispersion of 1200 km s-1. We show that the relative redshifts of different...

The observed solar p-mode velocity power spectra are compared with theoretically calculated power spectra over a range of mode degree and frequency. The shape of the theoretical power spectra depends on the depth of acoustic sources responsible for the excitation of p-modes, and also on the multipole nature of the source. We vary the source depth to obtain the best fit to the observed spectra. ...
