We found that Escherichia coli grown in media with >37 mM phosphate maintained a high polyphosphate level in late stationary phase, which could account for changes in gene expression and enzyme activities that enhance stationary-phase fitness.

The aim of the present study was to evaluate the chemical quality parameters regarding frozen Pangasius hypophthalmus specimens from Vietnam. The proximate composition, pH, ammonia, biogenic amines (BAs), total mercury (Hg), malondialdehyde (MDA), and polyphosphate were determined. The moisture, protein, lipid and ash values were between 83.83-85.59, 12.51-14.52, 1.09-1.65, and 0.76-2.38 g 100 ...

Generation of a wide variety of nucleoside (and deoxynucleoside) triphosphates (NTPs) from their cognate nucleoside diphosphates (NDPs) is of critical importance in virtually every aspect of cellular life. Their function is fulfilled largely by the ubiquitous and potent nucleoside diphosphate kinase (NDK), most commonly using ATP as the donor. Considerable interest is attached to the consequenc...

The ppk gene of Streptomyces lividans encodes an enzyme catalyzing, in vitro, the reversible polymerization of the gamma phosphate of ATP into polyphosphate and was previously shown to play a negative role in the control of antibiotic biosynthesis (H. Chouayekh and M. J. Virolle, Mol. Microbiol. 43:919-930, 2002). In the present work, some regulatory features of the expression of ppk were estab...

Synechococcus OS-B', a thermophilic unicellular cyanobacterium, recently isolated from the microbial mats in Octopus Spring (Yellowstone National Park), induces a suite of genes, including phosphatases and transporters, in response to phosphorus (P) starvation. Here we describe two different approaches to examine the ability of Synechococcus OS-B' to synthesize and break down polyphosphate (pol...

HIV-1 replication is inhibited by the incorporation of chain-terminating nucleotides at the 3' end of the growing DNA chain. Here we show a nucleotide-dependent reaction catalyzed by HIV-1 reverse transcriptase that can efficiently remove the chain-terminating residue, yielding an extendible primer terminus. Radioactively labeled 3'-terminal residue from the primer can be transferred into a pro...

We have measured the pyrimidine nucleotide contents of the culture fluid, acid-soluble fraction, and acid-insoluble fraction of cultures of hamster embryo fibroblasts (third subculture) through the final two divisions of growth in culture. The cells show a growth delay between the penultimate and ultimate division periods and a concomitant biochemical synchrony of pyrimidine metabolism. The cel...
