Plugged mesoporous SBA-15 having a 2-D hexagonal pore structure could be directly synthesized under acidic conditions using P123 as a supramolecular template, sodium metasilicate and alcoholamines. The use of alcoholamines seemed to play roles as capturing agents for silica sources that could form internal porous plugs.

A bile salt (sodium taurodeoxycholate, NaTDC) was used to prevent phase separation between silica and lipid in self-assembled long-chain diacyl phosphatidylcholine/SiO(2) films. We demonstrate the use of the miniaturised Medipix positron sensor for detection of the clinical PET radiotracer, [(68)Ga]gallium-citrate, on a silica-based monolith, towards microfluidic quality control. The system achieved a far superior signal-to-noise ratio compared to conventional sodium iodide-based radio-HPLC detection and allowed real-time visualisation of positrons in the monolith.
