We report herein the efficiency of microwave-assisted synthesis for obtaining ZnO/SnO2 heterostructures for room-temperature gas-sensing applications. The sensing performances of the traditional oxide materials have been found for applications above 200 °C. However, these temperatures were here reduced to room temperature by considering sensing activity photoactivated by UV light, even for ppb ...

Layered multi-oxide concept was applied for fabrication of photoanodes for dye-sensitized solar cells based on ZnO and SnO2, capitalizing on the beneficial properties of each oxide. The effect of different combinations of ZnO@SnO2 layers was investigated, aimed at exploiting the high carrier mobility provided by the ZnO and the higher stability under UV irradiation pledged by SnO2. Bi-oxide pho...

In this article, using first-principles electronic structure calculations within the spin density functional theory, alternated magnetic and non-magnetic layers of rutile-CrO2 and rutile-SnO2 respectively, in a (CrO2)n(SnO2)n superlattice (SL) configuration, with n being the number of monolayers which are considered equal to 1, 2, ..., 10 are studied. A half-metallic behavior is observed for th...

In this paper we investigate the surface chemistry, including surface contaminations, of SnO2 nanowires deposited on Ag-covered Si substrate by vapor phase deposition (VPD), thanks to x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) in combination with thermal desorption spectroscopy (TDS). Air-exposed SnO2 nanowires are slightly non-stoichiometric, and a huge amount of C contaminations is observed at th...

The present study examined the gas-phase photocatalytic degradation of toluene using ZnO-SnO2 nanocomposite supported on activated carbon in a photocatalytic reactor. Toluene was selected as a model pollutant from volatile organic compounds to determine the pathway of photocatalytic degradation and the factors influencing this degradation. The ZnO-SnO2 nanocomposite was synthesized through co-p...

Reserving interior void space in the cable-like structure of multiwalled carbon nanotubes-in-SnO2-in-carbon layer (MWNTs@SnO2@C) is reported for the first time. Such a design enables the structure performing excellent for Li and Na storage, which benefit from the good electrical conductivity of MWNTs and carbon layer as well as the reserved void space to accommodate the volume changes of SnO2.

We performed a comparative study of electrical and thermal properties of ZnOand SnO2-based varistor. The electrical properties of commercial ZnO-based varistor are equivalent to that found in SnO2-based varistor system. In spite of this, the SnO2 showed a thermal conductivity higher than commercial samples of ZnO-based varistor, which allied with its simpler microstructure and lower dopant conc...

The paper presents results concerning the effect of spatial inhomogeneous operating temperature on the gas discrimination power of a gas-sensor microarray, with the latter based on a thin SnO2 film employed in the KAMINA electronic nose. Three different temperature distributions over the substrate are discussed: a nearly homogeneous one and two temperature gradients, equal to approx. 3.3 C/mm a...

A method of wet chemical synthesis suitable for high throughput and combinatorial applications has been developed for the synthesis of porous resistive thickfilm gas sensors. This method is based on the robot-controlled application of unstable metal oxide suspensions on an array of 64 inter-digital electrodes positioned on an Al2O3 substrate. SnO2, WO3, ZrO2, TiO2, CeO2, In2O3 and Bi2O3 were ch...

This is well known that the selectivity and sensitivity of tin dioxide (SnO2) thin film sensors for the detection of low concentration of volatile sulfides such as H2S in air can be improved by small amount of Ag additives. In this paper we present the results of comparative X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), thermal desorption spectroscopy (TDS), and atomic force microscopy (AFM) studies ...
