In many studies, a continuous response variable is repeatedly measured over time on one or more subjects. The subjects might be grouped into different categories, such as cases and controls. The study of resulting observation profiles as functions of time is called functional data analysis. This paper shows how you can use the SSM procedure in SAS/ETS® software to model these functional data by...

The signed distance function can effectively support many geometry processing tasks such as decimates, smoothing and shape reconstruction since it provides efficient access to distance estimates. In this talk, we present an adaptive method to approximate the signed distance function of a smooth curve by using polynomial splines over type-2 triangulation. The trimmed offsets are also studied.

The purpose of smoothing (filtering) neuronal data is to improve the estimation of the instantaneous firing rate. In some applications, scientific interest centres on functions of the instantaneous firing rate, such as the time at which the maximal firing rate occurs or the rate of increase of firing rate over some experimentally relevant period. In others, the instantaneous firing rate is need...

This paper introduces five new univariate exponentially weighted methods for forecasting intraday time series that consist of both intraweek and intraday seasonal cycles. Applications of relevance include forecasting volumes of call centre arrivals, transportation, e-mail traffic and electricity load. The first method that we develop extends an exponential smoothing formulation that has been us...

Many different methods have been proposed to construct a smooth regression function, including local polynomial estimators, kernel estimators, smoothing splines and LS-SVM estimators. Each of these estimators use hyperparameters. In this paper a robust version for general cost functions based on the Akaike information criterion is proposed.

Gene expression profiles generated by the highthroughput microarray experiments are usually in the form of large matrices with high dimensionality. Unfortunately, microarray experiments can generate data sets with multiple missing values, which significantly affect the performance of subsequent statistical analysis and machine learning algorithms. Numerous imputation algorithms have been propos...
