[1] Mechanical properties of rocks are characterized by their notable dependence on the applied deformation rate. However, little is known about the strain rate dependence of fluid flow properties since most laboratory tests are conducted using a single, high strain rate. We have investigated the effect of loading rate on the permeability of porous sandstones by carrying out triaxial compressio...

Iodine goitre and hypothyroidism in 5 newborn infants in an intensive care unit were induced by cutaneous absorption of iodine, after numerous skin applications of iodine alcohol. The infant's skin permeability allows severe iodine overloading of the thyroid, resulting in goitre and hypothyroidism. Ioduria should always be sought in a newborn infant showing hypothyroidism. Iodine should not be ...

Investigation of the permeability of membranes is most important for biology. The complicated and variable permeability of biological membranes cannot be understood before the simpler conditions in artificial membranes of different qualities have been satisfactorily explained. After M. Traube in 1867 had developed the copper ferrocyanide membrane and Pfeffer published his investigations, the pr...

We will report on crosslinking of ceramides molecules in the stratum corneum of a live pig by non-equilibrium atmospheric pressure asymmetric dielectric barrier discharge treatment. This crosslinking leads to formation of temporary pores in the skin, leading to increased permeability of the skin which we have validated with vitamin D.

Urocortin (Ucn) is related to corticotropin-releasing hormone (CRH), and both are released in the brain under stress where they stimulate CRH 1 and 2 receptors (CRHR). Outside the brain, they may have proinflammatory actions through activation of mast cells, which are located perivascularly close to nerve endings and degranulate in response to acute psychological stress. Here, we report that a ...

Previous studies indicate that the transfer of proteins and other substances between synovial fluid and blood is more extensive for rheumatoid arthritics than for normal persons (Harris, Millard, and Banerjee, 1958; Platt, Holley, and Pigman, 1957; Michelazzi, 1943). The protein concentration in synovial fluid is also higher for rheumatoid arthritics than for healthy individuals (Platt and othe...

The purpose of this study was to characterize the non-aqueous nanosuspension of a hydrophilic drug prepared by bead milling for cutaneous application. Riboflavin was used as the model hydrophilic drug. The non-aqueous nanosuspensions were prepared by grinding riboflavin with zirconia beads using eight non-aqueous bases. The mean particle size of riboflavin in the suspensions ranged from 206 to ...

Skin permeability and local blood perfusion are important factors for transdermal drug delivery. Application of heat is expected to enhance microcirculation and local perfusion and/or blood vessel permeability, thus facilitating drug transfer to the systemic circulation. In addition, heating prior to or during topical application of a drug may facilitate skin penetration, increase kinetic energ...

The goal of this investigation was to measure changes in vascular permeability, pore cutoff size, and number of transvascular transport pathways as a function of time and in response to vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), placenta growth factor (PIGF-1 and PIGF-2), or basic fibroblast growth factor (bFGF). Two human and two murine tumors were implanted in the dorsal skin chamber or crani...

OBJECTIVE(S) Drug delivery through the skin can transfer therapeutic levels of drugs for pharmacological effects. Analgesics such as NSAIDs have gastrointestinal side effects and topical dosage forms of these drugs are mainly preferred, especially for local pains. Meloxicam is one of NSAIDs with no topical form in the market. In this research, we attempted to quantify the skin permeation of a m...
