Niklaus Wirth is not only a master of language design but also a pioneer of compiler construction. For four decades he has refined his techniques for building simple, efficient and reliable compilers. This paper tries to collect some general principles behind his work. It is not a paper about new compilation techniques but a reflection about Wirth's way to write compilers.

We present a certified declarative first-order prover with equality based on John Harrison’s Handbook of Practical Logic and Automated Reasoning, Cambridge University Press, 2009. ML code reflection is used such that the entire prover can be executed within Isabelle as a very simple interactive proof assistant. As examples we consider Pelletier’s problems 1-46.

Graphs which generalize the simple or affine Dynkin diagrams are introduced. Each diagram defines a bilinear form on a root system and thus a reflection group. We present some properties of these groups and of their natural “Coxeter element”. The folding of these graphs and groups is also discussed, using the theory of C-algebras.

We show that for two quivers without oriented cycles related by a BGP reflection, the posets of their tilting modules are related by a simple combinatorial construction, which we call flip-flop. We deduce that the posets of tilting modules of derived equivalent path algebras of quivers without oriented cycles are universally derived equivalent.

-An improved genetic algorithm applies the optimization procedures of protein folding through defining a new move set in lattice model. The new move set including rotation and mirror reflection is suitable for use in protein folding simulation.
