Southeast Asia has some of the highest deforestation rates globally, with Malaysia being identified as a deforestation hotspot. The Malayan tiger, a critically endangered subspecies of the tiger endemic to Peninsular Malaysia, is threatened by habitat loss and fragmentation. In this study, we estimate the natural forest loss and conversion to plantations in Peninsular Malaysia and specifically ...

Evidence suggests that non-domesticated felids inherited the same AB-erythrocyte antigens as domestic cats. To study the possible compatibility of tiger blood with that of other endangered felidae, blood samples from captive tigers and domestic cats were subjected to an in vitro study. The objectives of this study were to (1) identify whether the captive tigers had blood type AB and (2) determi...

The Caspian tiger (Panthera tigris virgata) flourished in Central Asian riverine forest systems in a range disjunct from that of other tigers, but was driven to extinction in 1970 prior to a modern molecular evaluation. For over a century naturalists puzzled over the taxonomic validity, placement, and biogeographic origin of this enigmatic animal. Using ancient-DNA (aDNA) methodology, we genera...

Little is known about the long-term movement patterns of most marine apex predators. A network of acoustic receivers was used to quantify the long-term movements of transmitterequipped tiger sharks Galeocerdo cuvier Péron & Lesueur, 1822 in the Main Hawaiian Islands. Tiger sharks were wide-ranging, swam between islands and patrolled up to 109 km of contiguous coastline. Visits to specific acous...

Siberian snakes avoid crossing depolarizing resonances in circular accelerators by forcing the spin tune to half integer independent of beam energy. This concept has been proposed by Ya.S. Derbenev and A.M. Kondratenko in 1974 [1]. If only one Siberian snake is used, the invariant spin axis1 is in the horizontal plane. This is an interesting feature to deliver longitudinally polarized beam to i...

Tigers, the largest of the felids, are now a globally threatened species with only approximately 3000 wild tigers surviving. India contains about 60% or 2000 of the animals, yet despite aggressive conservation efforts the number of tigers is declining. The causes of the decline are prey depletion, habitat destruction and poaching. Over the past 30 years of tiger conservation efforts in the vari...

The VNTR loci D7S104, D11S129, D18S17, D20S15, and D21S112 in three indigenous Siberian populations were analyzed to determine the populations' genetic structure. Using the Kolmogorov-Smirnov test, we found that the Siberian indigenous populations of Surinda and Sulamai are separated at the D11S129 locus (p < 0.05). However, the population of Poligus is genetically homogeneous compared with the...

South Siberian Turkic languages are rich in sound symbolic subsystems, both in their lexica and in the productive morphophonology, but these systems remain to be adequately documented. This paper presents new field data on sound symbolism in two South Siberian Turkic languages: Tofa(lar) and Tuvan (including the unwritten Tsengel and Hovd dialects spoken in Mongolia). Sound symbolic word format...

This paper documents the TIGER 700 RMRS Treebank which has been obtained as the result of a software project. The treebank is a semantic projection from a subset of the TIGER Dependency Bank and was derived automatically, using treebank conversion methods. In a second phase, it will be manually validated and corrections will be made as necessary, supported by an interactive editing tool.

Oriented samples of the Lov.'er Cambrian Sayan Go! Formation from Salaany Go!, Mongolia, were collected at roughly 5 m stratigraphic intervals for palaeomagnetic analysis. Progressive alternatingfield and thermal demagnetization isolated two magnetic components: a present-field overprint, typically removed by 10 mT fields and -200 °C heating: and a high-coercivity, high-unblocking-temperature (...
