Optical microresonators have proven powerful in a wide range of applications, including cavity quantum electrodynamics1-3, biosensing4, microfludics5, and cavity optomechanics6-8. Their performance depends critically on the exact distribution of optical energy, confined and shaped by the nanoscale device geometry. Near-field optical probes9 can image this distribution, but the physical probe ne...

An eye-shaped segmented (ESS) antenna is presented for ultra-high frequency (UHF) near-field radio frequency identification (RFID) applications. The proposed antenna shows in-phase current even though the perimeter of the eye-shaped loop is comparable to the operating wavelength. The ESS antenna is fabricated on a FR4 printed circuit board (PCB) and embedded in a metal cavity with an overall si...

A 51-year-old previously healthy male underwent a routine medical examination. Computed tomography and ultrasonography showed an oval-shaped mass that was about 50 × 40 mm in size in the left iliac fossa. Prior to surgery, the lesion was suspected to be a teratoma with core calcification or stromal tumor derived from the rectosigmoid colon. During the procedure, a yellow-white, egg-shaped mass ...

We report the experimental realization of deformed microcavity quantum cascade lasers (QCLs) with a Limaçon-shaped chaotic resonator. Directional light emission with a beam divergence of θ‖ ≈ 33 from QCLs emitting at λ≈ 10μm was obtained in the plane of the cavity for deformations in the range 0.37< ε < 0.43. An excellent agreement between measured and calculated far-field profiles was found. B...

Multiple whitish nodules in the thoracic cavity at the site of the thymus were observed in a 101-week-old male ICR mouse. In a histopathological examination, the neoplastic cells were predominantly fusiform in shape and proliferated in sarcomatoid growth patterns. Some neoplastic cells showed epithelial growth patterns, such as the ductal structures. Mitotic figures were frequently seen, and sm...

We present results of experimental and theoretical investigations of electron transport through stub-shaped waveguides or electron stub tuners (ESTs) in the ballistic regime. Measurements of the conductance G as a function of voltages, applied to different gates Vi (i =bottom, top, and side) of the device, show oscillations in the region of the first quantized plateau which we attribute to refl...

A one-year-old, female Mexican axolotl (Ambystoma mexicanum) had a rough-surfaced, polypoid, pink tumor mass of approximately 10 mm in diameter in the oral cavity. Histologically, the tumor extended from the ethmoturbinate region and into the oral cavity and had replaced some of the maxillary bone tissue. The tumor mass was composed of a lobular architecture of small round-shaped tumor cells wi...

The influence of wall elasticity on the response of a Helmholtz resonator is examined by analyzing the canonical case of a thin elastic spherical shell with a circular aperture subject o plane wave excitation. By neglecting the thickness of the wall and representing the elasticity via a "thin shell" theory the problem is reduced to one of solving an integral equation over the aperture for the p...

The facade of the office levels has mechanically ventilated windows. The warm air in the room is extracted above the lighting units, so that the air also takes up their additional heat. Then this air is fed via specially shaped ducts at the level of the topmost transoms into the narrow cavity of the story-height ventilated windows. Here the air is warmed further by taking up heat from radiation...
