Faced with an epidemic of an infectious disease, persons may take precautionary actions to try to reduce their risk. Such actions include avoiding situations that persons perceive to be risky, which can have negative health and economic effects. Therefore, we conducted a population-based survey of persons' precautionary actions in response to a hypothetical influenza pandemic. For the 5 Europea...
Those of you who were able to participate in the 13th World Congress on Disaster and Emergency Medicine (WCDEM-13) in Melbourne in May 2003 were involved in a well-organized and well-conducted convocation in the midst of world chaos. Principal among the world problems at the time were the outbreak of the Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS) and the early phases of the "pre-emptive" war in I...
Background: There is significant evidence to support that patients with the Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) have a higher propensity develop thrombotic events. COVID-19 in intensive care units (ICU) an increased rate of venous thromboembolism (VTE), ranging from 17% 25%. Apart acute respiratory failure, coagulopathy remains common abnormality these patients, within creased levels both fibri...
The use of PIU during the SARS crisis had a number of positive effects in Taiwan. It enabled the safe transport of SARS patients between hospitals by air and road and decreased the risk of cross-infecting transport personnel. The anxiety of transport personnel was decreased, as was the fear felt by the population of the outer islands. In addition, the credibility of the local health authorities...
This paper presents a statistical study of a deterministic model for the transmission dynamics and control of severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS). The effect of the model parameters on the dynamics of the disease is analyzed using sensitivity and uncertainty analyses. The response (or output) of interest is the control reproduction number, which is an epidemiological threshold governing th...
Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS) is a potentially severe and highly infectious disease to which healthcare workers involved in the management of cases are particularly vulnerable. These guidelines briefly summarise optimal and safe practice for clinicians involved in the emergency care of patients with probable or confirmed SARS.
Many severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) patients have multiple possible incubation periods due to multiple contact dates. Multiple contact dates cannot be used in standard statistical analytic techniques, however. I present a simple spreadsheet-based method that uses multiple contact dates to calculate the possible incubation periods of SARS.
Dr. Carlo Urbani was the first person to recognize Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS) in a Hanoi, Vietnam, hospital. On March 29, 2003, only one month after the discovery, Dr. Urbani died from the disease, largely because of his belief that it is a doctor’s duty to “stay close to the victims.” His wife, Giuliani, mother of three, challenged her husband on the point; Dr. Urbani replied, “I...
BACKGROUND There has been an outbreak of the severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) worldwide. With the use of detailed epidemiological data from other countries, this article describes the possible reason for the SARS epidemic not appearing in Japan, and simulates the impact of different control strategies that can break the transmission cycle of SARS associated coronavirus. METHOD Mathema...
