Seizure clusters in epilepsy can result in serious outcomes such as missed work or school, postictal psychosis, emergency room visits, or hospitalizations, and yet they are often not included in discussions between health-care professionals (HCPs) and their patients. The purpose of this paper was to describe and compare consumer (patient and caregivers) and professional understanding of seizure...

PURPOSE IQ tests are frequently used in the preoperative neuropsychological assessment of candidates for anterior temporal lobectomy (ATL). We reviewed IQ test results and surgery outcomes to evaluate the roles of IQ tests in the preoperative work-up. METHODS A total of 205 adult patients who had undergone ATL and whose seizure outcomes were followed for 2 years after surgery were included. T...

PURPOSE To determine the efficacy of the Modified Atkins Diet (MAD) and Ketogenic Diet (KD) in seizure control within a population of myoclonic-astatic epilepsy (MAE) patients. METHODS This was a retrospective, single center study evaluating the seizure control by high fat diets. Seizure diaries kept by the parents performed seizure counts. All patients met the clinical criteria for MAE. RE...

OBJECT Although a number of recent studies on the surgical treatment of insular low-grade glioma (LGG) have demonstrated that aggressive resection leads to increased overall patient survival and decreased malignant progression, less attention has been given to the results with respect to tumor-related epilepsy. The aim of this investigation was to evaluate the impact of volumetric, histological...

Objective: Seizure is the most common neurological disorder in pediatric medicine. This disorder is often chronic and requires continuous treatment. Developmental disorders are conditions that can occur due to abnormal development or damage to the brain and central nervous periods (out-of-hospital). However, in most studies, the severity of seizure relapse is mistakenly considered the same for ...

Background and Objective: In spite of various and effective anti seizure drugs available, 30% of epileptic patients are not adequately treated with current medications. Based on the effectiveness of phytocannabinoids on epileptic and seizure models, in this study the effects of 2-achidonoylglycerol (2-AG) injection, as an important endocannabinoid, on tonic-clonic seizures induced by pentylenet...

We report a seizure-related death in a patient with juvenile myoclonic epilepsy 3 months following a previous generalised tonic-clonic seizure complicated by pulmonary oedema. Seizure-related pulmonary oedema is rare but may indicate an increased susceptibility to epilepsy related death. We consider possible preventative measures for patients presenting with seizure-related pulmonary oedema.

The ECG has been much neglected in automatic seizure detection in the newborn. Changes in heart rate and ECG rhythm are often found in animal and adult patients with seizure. However, little is known about heart rate variability (HRV) changes in human neonate during seizure. Results of ongoing time-frequency research are presented here with the aim to compare the performance of various time-fre...

The electroencephalogram (EEG) is an invaluable measurement for the purpose of assessing brain activities. The detection of epileptic seizures based on EEG signal is very useful in diagnostics. In this paper, we present a new method for discrimination between seizure and seizure-free EEG signals. The proposed method is based on empirical mode decomposition (EMD) process. We investigated that th...
