INTRODUCTION Gastric volvulus is an uncommon clinical entity, first described by Berti in 1866. It is a rotation of all or part of the stomach through more than 180 degrees . This rotation can occur on the longitudinal (organo-axial) or transverse (mesentero-axial) axis. This condition can lead to a closed-loop obstruction or strangulation. Traditional surgical therapy for gastric volvulus is b...

BACKGROUND/AIMS Although multiple treatment options exist for the management of sigmoid colon volvulus, no study has examined the factors associated with successful endoscopic detorsion. This study aimed to examine the clinical course of patients with sigmoid colon volvulus and to identify factors related to successful endoscopic detorsion. METHODS This study included 30 cases (21 patients) o...

Association of gastric volvulus with agenesis of the left lobe of the liver is very rare and mostly reported in adults. We report a case of gastric volvulus associated with agenesis of the left lobe of the liver in a child, which was successfully treated by laparoscopic gastropexy.

Gastric bypass patients are at risk for small-bowel obstruction secondary to adhesions, internal hernias, intussusception and volvulus. Most gastric bypass patients do not present with classic obstructive symptoms. We present a rare case of concurrent intussusception and volvulus in a woman with previous history of internal hernia following laparoscopic Roux-en-Y gastric bypass surgery.

Endosymbiotic Wolbachia bacteria that infect the filarial nematode Onchocerca volvulus were previously found to have an essential role in the pathogenesis of river blindness. The current study demonstrates that corneal inflammation induced by Wolbachia or O. volvulus antigens containing Wolbachia is completely dependent on expression of myeloid differentiation factor 88.

We report eventration of right hemi-diaphragm resulting in gastric volvulus of the right sided stomach in an infant. The diagnosis of this rare association was made with contrast CT scan. Patient was initially managed with reduction of stomach, plication of right hemi diaphragm, anterior gastropexy and Ladds procedure, but required re-laparotomy after two months for recurrent volvulus.

The possibility of concomitant immunity and its potential mechanisms in Onchocerca volvulus infection were examined by analyzing cytokine and antibody responses to infective larval (third-stage larvae [L3] and molting L3 [mL3]), adult female worm (F-OvAg), and skin microfilaria (Smf) antigens in infected individuals in a region of hyperendemicity in Cameroon as a function of age. Peripheral blo...

INTRODUCTION Colonic volvulus is a rare entity associated with high mortality rates. Most studies come from areas of high endemicity and are limited by small numbers. No studies have investigated trends, outcomes, and predictors of mortality at the national level. METHODS The Nationwide Inpatient Sample 2002-2010 was retrospectively reviewed for colonic volvulus cases admitted emergently. Pat...

The macrofilaricidal effects of local infiltration of high concentrations of chloroquine into the capsule of onchocercal nodules on adult worms of Onchocerca volvulus was determined. Six weeks post infiltration, histological examination of single nodules showed all adult worms to be dead. With nodule conglomerates, there was localized action of chloroquine only on the adult worms in the infiltr...

Factors that affect the propensity of a simuliid species to act as a host to Onchocerca volvulus and to naturally transmit this filarial worm in nature are discussed. Presence or absence of a cibarial armature is believed to be a major factor that has been previously overlooked and this is considered in relation to the choice of control methods currently advocated for onchocerciasis. The curren...
