Stress fracture of the carpal scaphoid is very rare. We present stress fracture of the scaphoid in an adolescent gymnast who was treated with internal fixation. Key pointsThere is a risk of stress fracture of the scaphoid in gymnast.Internal fixation with a screw is one of the good options for stress fracture of the scaphoid.
BACKGROUND The current standard of care for operative repair of scaphoid fractures involves reduction and internal fixation with a single headless compression screw. However, a compression screw in isolation does not necessarily control rotational stability at a fracture or nonunion site. The single screw provides rotational control through friction and bone interdigitation from compression at ...
Eleven patients who had an ununited fracture of the scaphoid associated with loss of the blood supply to the proximal fragment were managed operatively with a combination of an inlay corticocancellous bone graft from the iliac crest and implantation of the second dorsal intermetacarpal artery, its accompanying venae comitantes, and a thin cuff of perivascular tissue. The absence of the blood su...
Standard radiological diagnosis of scaphoid fractures involves four views of the wrist PA, lateral and two obliques. This amount of irradiation may be unnecessary, and previous authors have claimed that two views, Stecher (1937) (PA with 300 angulation towards the elbow giving an elongated view of scaphoid) and lateral, are of equal, or better, diagnostic accuracy. This study was performed to t...
We present a case report of an 18 year-old gymnast who was diagnosed with a scaphoid stress fracture associated with a distal radial epiphysiolysis, reporting the treatment of choice. After a brief literature review about this rare association, the authors ask for attention concerning the importance of physical and image examination in making right diagnosis and finding associated injuries.
Despite the high incidence of scaphoid fractures, their diagnosis and treatment is often delayed which can lead to complications such as non-union, avascular necrosis, and future arthritis. We present three cases with non-classical mechanisms of injury, leading to a delayed diagnosis in all three cases. Our cases serve to emphasize the importance of a high index of suspicion for the possibility...
Figure 1. Preoperative posteroanterior radiographs showing progressive fragmentation and collapse of the lunate, as well as subsequent pathologic fracture of the scaphoid.
Isolated dislocation of the carpal scaphoid is a rare injury. Such dislocation is extremely rare. In this article the authors report a twenty-eight-year-old man with isolated dislocation of the scaphoid with associating radial styloid fracture. We manage the patient with open reduction and Kirschner wire fixation. One year later there is a good functional and radiographic result.
PurposeWe evaluated the impact of structural versus nonstructural bone grafting on time to union, scaphoid deformity correction, and clinical outcomes in adults with unstable waist nonunion without avascular necrosis. We hypothesized that would provide earlier restoration anatomy, equivalent compared grafting.MethodsWe prospectively randomized 98 patients undergo open reduction, iliac crest eit...
The movements of the carpal bones during the scaphoid shift test were evaluated radiographically in 60 wrists. The clinical results were graded according to the degree of subluxation of the scaphoid and pain on the dorsum of the wrist. Lateral radiographs at rest and under stress were taken and the relative movements of the scaphoid with respect to the radius and lunate, and the rotation of the...
