Continental-scale topographic profiles between 28.45° N and S latitudes acquired by the first flight of the Shuttle Laser Altimeter (SLA) experiment are used to evaluate the vertical accuracy of GTOPO30, a global digital elevation model with a grid spacing of approximately 1 km. GTOPO30 is a compilation of eight sources of elevation information, including raster and vector data sets. The mean a...
[1] By means of Bayesian hierarchical modeling (BHM), we develop a model for aspects of vigorous air-sea interactions on a basin scale. The approach relies on both physical reasoning and statistical techniques for data processing and uncertainty management. The theory and current practice of BHM of air-sea interaction physics will be introduced and demonstrated in this paper. The demonstration ...
The surface topography of the Greenland and Antarctic ice sheets is the principal ice parameter obtainable from satellite radar altimetry. The improved ability of the GEOSA T altimeter to follow irregular surfaces and its extended operation have greatly increased the available topographic data on ice sheets for the study of ice dynamics and the possible detection of changes in global ice volume.
Here we report timed observations with subnanosecond precision of short laser pulses at a distance of nearly 24 million kilometers between the Mercury Laser Altimeter (MLA) aboard the MESSENGER (MErcury Surface, Space ENvironment, GEochemistry, and Ranging) spacecraft and the NASA Goddard Geophysical and Astronomical Observatory (GGAO). Forty MLA downlink observations and 90 uplink observations...
Corrections to altimeter-measured sea surface height anomalies (SSHA) have a larger proportional effect for synthetic aperture radar (SAR) altimetry than conventional, pulse-limited because of lower range noise. Here, we quantified the impact current generation altimeter corrections in coastal zone Northwest Atlantic, region with significant dynamic activity. In this study, used level variance ...
