Pineapples grown in acid soils containing high levels of manganese (Mn) can exhibit iron deficiency because Mn interferes with iron bio-functioning. This situation is commonly corrected with regular iron sprays. Soil Mn concentration can be reduced by liming, but pineapple growers keep the soil pH below 5.0 because it helps reduce the incidence of rots caused by Phytophthora sp. This study was ...

Each ommatidium of the Drosophila eye is constructed by precisely 19 specified precursor cells, generated in part during a second mitotic wave of cell divisions that overlaps early stages of ommatidial cell specification. Homozygotes for the pineapple eye mutation lack sufficient precursor cells due to apoptosis during the period of fate specification. In addition development is delayed by apop...

Tropical fruits like pineapple, papaya, mango, and beverages such as green or black teas, represent an underestimated source of antioxidants that could exert health-promoting properties. Most food processing technologies applied to fruit beverages or teas result in an impairment of inherent nutritional properties. Conversely, we hypothesise that lactic acid fermentation may constitute a promisi...

The amino acid sequences of ananain (EC3.4.22.31) and stem bromelain (3.4.22.32), two cysteine proteases from pineapple stem, are similar yet ananain and stem bromelain possess distinct specificities towards synthetic peptide substrates and different reactivities towards the cysteine protease inhibitors E-64 and chicken egg white cystatin. We present here the complete amino acid sequence of ana...

The relationships between Rotylenchulus reniformis population densities and pineapple growth and yield were studied in a small-plot field experiment. Increasing rates of handgun-injected 1,3-dichloropropene (1,3-D) preplant fumigant from 0 to 337 liters/ha resulted in greater nematode control, faster plant growth, and larger pineapple fruits. Rotylenchulus reniformis population densities at 2, ...

Abstract The authors conducted a survey of Pineapple Mealybug Wilt-associated Virus (PMWaV) on pineapple plants in four pineapple-producing sub-districts North Tapanuli, namely Sipahutar, Pangaribuan, Siborongborong, and Tarutung. This aims to detect the presence distribution PMWaV Tapanuli. found all locations with varying symptoms such as wilting yellow-red colour curling leaf tips, drying le...

A new species of terrestrial sesarmid crab, Scandarma raymondi, is described from Sabah, Malaysia. This is the third species in the genus; others are from Taiwan, Japan and Sarawak, Borneo. The new species differs from congeners in the live coloration, proportions of the carapace and ambulatory legs and morphologies of the male abdomen, chela and male first gonopod.
