Pulmonary embolism is a serious, life-threatening condition and most commonly derives from deep vein thrombosis of the lower extremities. Once deep vein thrombosis (DVT) reaches a proximal vein (i.e., popliteal vein or higher), pulmonary embolism reportedly occurs in up to 50% of patients. Case Presentation. We report on an inpatient with major depressive disorder in a catatonic state in whom a...
Portomesenteric venous thrombosis is a rare complication after laparoscopic cholecystectomy. Sufficient management is important for prevention of bowel infarction. We present a severe case of portomesenteric venous thrombosis. Partial thrombosis of the central portal vein, complete thrombosis of the left portal vein and the superior mesenteric vein, as well as venous stasis of the small bowel a...
OBJECTIVE To accelerate vein graft reendothelialization and reduce vein graft thrombosis by infusing human umbilical cord blood-derived endothelial cells (hCB-ECs) because loss of endothelium contributes to vein graft thrombosis and neointimal hyperplasia. METHODS AND RESULTS Under steady flow conditions in vitro, hCB-ECs adhered to smooth muscle cells 2.5 to 13 times more than ECs derived fr...
BACKGROUND There are limited reports of thrombosis among myelodysplastic syndrome patients exposed to erythropoiesis stimulating agents. It is not clear whether erythropoiesis stimulating agents are associated with an increased risk of thrombosis in myelodysplastic syndromes, as they are among patients with solid tumors. DESIGN AND METHODS The association between use of erythropoiesis stimula...
We present an unusual case of a scalp vein detected by using angiography of the internal carotid artery. The vein arose from the superior sagittal sinus and drained into the deep posterior cervical vein via the parietal emissary vein. This scalp vein may be a collateral pathway for venous sinuses; however, the patient had no evidence of venous sinus occlusive disease or intracranial hypertension.
Deep vein thrombosis (DVT) remains a life-threatening complication of arthroplasty, despite the development of preventive measures. DVT is caused by both acquired and genetic risk factors. The identification of persons at high risk of DVT clearly aids prevention of the same. Age, sex, pregnancy, hormone therapy, an increase in body-mass index (BMI), history of thromboembolism, and surgery are r...
