Recently, a great deal of effort has been focused on developing the so called “fully unconstrained” approach to noncollinear magnetism. This approach allows the magnetization density within a material to be calculated as a continuous vector variable of position, as opposed to using the atomic moment approximation (AMA) where a fixed quantization direction is assumed for a volumefilling sphere s...

The recently discovered phosphorenes are emerging as promising 2D materials for nanoelectronics. Novel structures and topologies can produce new properties and functionalities, and pave the way for potential new applications. For the first time, we predict two novel highly stable free-standing 2D monolayers of P and As with exotic hypercoordination motifs. This is the first hexacoordinate P and...

Magnetism plays a key role in modern technology and stimulates research in several branches of condensed matter physics. Although the theory of classical magnetism is well developed, the demonstration of a widely tunable experimental system has remained an elusive goal. Here, we present the realization of a large-scale simulator for classical magnetism on a triangular lattice by exploiting the ...

Many complex natural systems studied in the geosciences are characterized by simple local-scale interactions that result in complex emergent behavior. Simulations of these systems, often implemented in parallel using standard central processing unit (CPU) clusters, may be better suited to parallel processing environments with large numbers of simple processors. Such an environment is found in g...

EuTiO3, which is a G-type antiferromagnet below TN = 5.5 K, has some fascinating properties at high temperatures, suggesting that macroscopically hidden dynamically fluctuating weak magnetism exists at high temperatures. This conjecture is substantiated by magnetic field dependent magnetization measurements, which exhibit pronounced anomalies below 200 K becoming more distinctive with increasin...

We report a novel aspect of the competition and coexistence between magnetism and superconductivity in the high-T(c) cuprate La(2-x)Sr(x)CuO4 (La214). With a modest magnetic field applied H parallel c axis, we monitored the infrared signature of pair tunneling between the CuO2 planes and discovered the complete suppression of interlayer coupling in a series of underdoped La214 single crystals. ...
