Phylogenetic analysis of Rhizopus strains based on the D1/D2 region of LSU rDNA sequences yielded a phylogram with four well-supported clades. The R. microsporus clade concurs with classification obtained by traditional methods. The R. oryzae group was found to include species of the genus Amylomyces. The traditional R. stolonifer group was divided into two well-supported clades in the phylogra...

1. Mycelium of Rhizopus nigricans when stained with certain acid and basic dyes and washed with buffer mixtures of 0.1 M phosphoric acid and sodium hydroxide responded much like an amphoteric colloid with an isoelectric point near pH 5.0. 2. When grown on potato dextrose agar the reaction of which was varied with phosphoric acid the extent of colony growth of Rhizopus nigricans plotted against ...

Rhizopus stolonifer was cultivated in wheat bran to produce a cellulase-free alkaline xylanase. The purified enzyme obtained after molecular exclusion chromatography in Sephacryl S-200 HR showed optimum temperature as 45o C and hydrolysis pHs optima as pH 6.0 and 9.0. Xylanase presented higher Vmax at pH 9.0 (0.87 μmol/mg protein) than at pH 6.0 and minor Km at pH 6.0 (7.42 mg/mL) than at pH 9.0.

Posaconazole and itraconazole were more potent inhibitors of ergosterol synthesis, in both intact cells and cell extracts from Absidia corymbifera and Rhizopus oryzae, than voriconazole and fluconazole. Similarly, expression of CYP51 from R. oryzae in Saccharomyces cerevisiae significantly increased resistance to fluconazole and voriconazole but not to posaconazole and itraconazole.

An enhanced, xylose-utilizing strain of Rhizopus arrhizus was successfully developed via modification using media with increasing concentrations of xylose. Xylose, a relatively cheap monosugar that can be easily obtained from corncobs, rice straw, and vinasse, was the sole carbon source used for both the seed culture phase and the fermentation process. After modification, this newly improved st...

Aspergillus oryzae glucoamylases encoded by glaA and glaB, and Rhizopus oryzae glucoamylase, were displayed on the cell surface of sake yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae GRI-117-UK and laboratory yeast S. cerevisiae MT8-1. Among constructed transformants, GRI-117-UK/pUDGAA, displaying glaA glucoamylase, produced the most ethanol from liquefied starch, although MT8-1/pUDGAR, displaying R. oryzae gl...

Catalytic properties of two glucoamylases, AmyC and AmyD, without starch binding domains from Rhizopus oryzae strain 99-880 are determined using heterologously expressed enzyme purified to homogeneity. AmyC and AmyD demonstrate pH optima of 5.5 and 6.0, respectively, nearly one unit higher than the Rhizopus AmyA glucoamylase enzyme. Optimal initial activities are at 60 and 50 °C for AmyC and Am...
