Twenty-five patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) and neutropenia, of whom 19 had a palpable spleen, were compared with 24 patients with uncomplicated RA, and 16 patients with RA and associated splenomegaly without neutropenia. Clinically patients with neutropenia had evidence of a more systemic disease as assessed by prevalence of rheumatoid nodules, weight loss, and recurrent infections. Ho...
BACKGROUND Anti-citrullinated protein antibodies have been detected with high specificity in serum of patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA), and citrullination of proteins may play a key role in the pathogenesis of RA. We therefore investigated the presence of citrullination in two extra-articular manifestations of RA, interstitial pneumonia (IP) and rheumatoid nodules. METHODS Open-lung bi...
Specific endocarditis involving the aortic and mitral valves in a patient with peripheral rheumatoid arthritis is reported. The patient underwent prosthetic replacement of both valves. Typical rheumatoid nodules were detected histologically in the valvular tissues.
We studied 11 patients (14 elbows) with gross rheumatoid deformity of the elbow, treated by total arthroplasty using the Kudo type-5 unlinked prosthesis, and who were evaluated between five and 11 years after operation. Massive bone defects were augmented by autogenous bone grafts. There were no major complications such as infection, subluxation or loosening. In most elbows relief from pain and...
An investigation of lung function was carried out in 99 randomly selected patients with calssic or definite rheumatoid arthritis and in 60 control subjects matched for age, sex, and smoking habits. Mean FEV1 and mean VC were both significantly lower in the rheumatoid patients due to significant differences for women but mean FEV/VC ratio was 73.0% in the rheumatoid group and 72.1% in the contro...
The rheumatoid factor, a group of unusual macroglobulins, is demonstrable in the serum of the majori ty of patients with rheumatoid arthritis and in a relatively small proportion of patients with other diseases (1). The presence of this factor can be demonstrated by its reaction with human v-globulin (Cohn fraction I I ) in such serological procedures as the tanned sheep cell agglutination (2) ...
In an attempt to confirm the reported high incidence of raised serum gastrin levels in patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA), gastrin concentrations were estimated in 54 patients. Only three patients (6%) had basal hypergastrinaemia. The heptadecapeptide (G17) and total carboxylterminal immunoreactive gastrin responses to a standard protein meal were measured by specific radioimmunoassay in t...
A patient exhibiting typical features of classical rheumatoid arthritis and psoriatic spondylitis is described. The patient, a woman, presented at the age of 29 with an inflammatory arthritis. Twenty years later, she developed psoriasis, and after a further 3 years, she was first noted to have rheumatoid nodules and to be strongly seropositive. Now at the age of 60, she has a rigid spine with r...
