Solar light is the primary source of UV radiation for all living systems. UV photons can mediate damage through two different mechanisms, either by direct absorption of UV via cellular chromophores, resulting in excited states formation and subsequent chemical reaction, or by phosensitization mechanisms, where the UV light is absorbed by endogenous (or exogenous) sensitizers that are excited an...

Fluorination of fluorophores can substantially enhance their photostability and improve spectroscopic properties. To facilitate access to fluorinated fluorophores, bis(2,4,5-trifluorophenyl)methanone was synthesized by treatment of 2,4,5-trifluorobenzaldehyde with a Grignard reagent derived from 1-bromo-2,4,5-trifluorobenzene, followed by oxidation of the resulting benzyl alcohol. This hexafluo...

Photochemical reactions in solution often proceed via competing reaction pathways comprising intermediates that capture a solvent molecule. A disclosure of the underlying reaction mechanisms is challenging due to the rapid nature of these processes and the intricate identification of how many solvent molecules are involved. Here combining broadband femtosecond transient absorption and quantum m...

We report the structural characterization of a thiolate-ligated ferryl radical. Using x-ray absorption spectroscopy, we examined chloroperoxidase (CPO) compound I (CPO-I). Our results indicate that CPO-I is an authentic ferryl species with an Fe-O bond of 1.65 A. Axial-ligand interactions result in a remarkably long 2.48-A Fe-S bond. Analogous forms of cytochrome P450 and CPO have been shown to...

We present a mechanistic study on selective hydrogenation of acrolein over model Pd surfaces--both single crystal Pd(111) and Pd nanoparticles supported on a model oxide support. We show for the first time that selective hydrogenation of the C═O bond in acrolein to form an unsaturated alcohol is possible over Pd(111) with nearly 100% selectivity. However, this process requires a very distinct m...

1. Immune sera prepared with the degraded or variant forms of pneumococci (R strains) are similar in their reactions to sera prepared with the protein or cell solutions of pneumococci. They contain antibodies reactive with the protein of all types of pneumococci, but no antibodies reactive with the type-specific substances. 2. Pneumococci of the variant or R form, regardless of type derivation,...

The main hypothesis of the presented study is that the negative effect of phosphorus leaching from a green roof substrate can be reduced by including P-reactive material in a drainage layer. In this work, different aggregates (Pollytag, lightweight expanded clay aggregates, chalcedony, serpentynite and crushed autoclaved aerated concrete) to be used as the green roof drainage layer are describe...

Three phthalocyanine derivatives were synthesized and characterized: one modified with a racemic mixture of 1-(4-bromophenyl)ethanol and two other macrocycles modified with each one of the enantioenriched isomers (R)-1-(4-bromophenyl)ethanol and (S)-1-(4-bromophenyl)ethanol. The compounds were characterized by 1H-NMR spectroscopy, mass spectrometry, UV-Vis absorption, and excitation and emissio...

Lutein and zeaxanthin are antioxidants found in the human retina and macula. Recent clinical trials have determined that age- and diet-related loss of lutein and zeaxanthin enhances phototoxic damage to the human eye and that supplementation of these carotenoids has a protective effect against photoinduced damage to the lens and the retina. Two of the major mechanisms of protection offered by l...

We used the slide agglutination test to determine the serologic relationships of 22 Legionella spp. representing 33 serogroups. Antisera prepared against 14 of the Legionella spp. contained cross-reactive antibodies (1+ or greater) at their working dilutions. Numerous cross-reactions were observed for the blue-white fluorescing Legionella spp. With only three exceptions in the latter group, cro...
