Allescheria boydii and its imperfect state, Monosporium apiospermum, were studied to determine whether asexual or sexual strains might exhibit different pathogenic potentials for mice. Six different strains of the fungus were inoculated into mice by the intravenous, intracerebral, intraperitoneal, and intranasal routes. Cortisone-treated mice regularly developed infections after inoculation by ...

Definitive studies of the serological relationships between members of the E&chericki coli group and other groups within the family Enterobacteriaceae were made possible by the differentiation of the thermolabile and thermostable somatic antigens of E. coli cultures (Kuffmann, 1943, 1944a) and the subsequent introduction and establishment of the Kauiffmann-KnipschildVahlne antigenic schema. As ...

Aspergillus species are ubiquitous molds to which humans are commonly exposed. Of approximately 180 species, it is estimated that 34 are medically significant.1 Most persons who come in contact with the fungus remain asymptomatic. However, some experience mild morbidity demonstrated by recurrent sinusitis, asthma exacerbations, or allergic bronchopulmonary aspergillosis. Patients who are immuno...

An outbreak of Shigellosis due to Shigella sonnei, S. flexnerii and S. boydii in an ultra-religious Jewish community in Southern Israel is described. The source of epidemic was traced to vegetables bought from a single source. The importance of epidemic and endemic modes of spread of Shigella is discussed.

This is the first report of the isolation of Shiga toxin-producing Escherichia coli (STEC) strains whose O antigens were genetically and serologically identical to those of Shigella boydii type 10, from human feces. The novel STEC O serogroup may be widespread in Japan and associated with diarrhea and hemorrhagic colitis.

Current methods of DNA extraction from different fungal pathogens are often time-consuming and require the use of toxic chemicals. DNA isolation from some fungal organisms is difficult due to cell walls or capsules that are not readily susceptible to lysis. We therefore investigated a new and rapid DNA isolation method using high-speed cell disruption (HSCD) incorporating chaotropic reagents an...
