A simple and rapid quantification method was developed for determining nisoldipine in plasma. After a simple protein precipitation with a mixture of 10% of zinc sulfate and methanol, the analytes were chromatographed on a reversed-phase C(18) column, and detected by MS/MS. The assay precision was less than 10.7%, and the accuracy ranged from 86 to 112%. The limit of quantification was 0.1 ng/ml...

This procedure for determining serum proline in patients with hyperprolinemia involves protein precipitation (Folin-Wu method), color development with isatin, extraction of the color with methylene chloride and measurement of its absorbance at 600 nm. The specificity and analytical recovery show the method to be suitable for this use.

The study of the interactions of salts and osmolytes with macromolecules in aqueous solution originated with experiments concerning protein precipitation more than 100 years ago. Today, these solutes are known to display recurring behavior for myriad biological and chemical processes. Such behavior depends both on the nature and concentration of the species in solution. Despite the generality o...

The effects of pH and electrolyte concentration on protein-protein interactions in lysozyme and chymotrypsinogen solutions were investigated by static light scattering (SLS) and small-angle neutron scattering (SANS). Very good agreement between the values of the virial coefficients measured by SLS and SANS was obtained without use of adjustable parameters. At low electrolyte concentration, the ...

The ability to predict the performance of large-scale processes is central to the rapid development of successful operations at the pilot and industrial scale. In this article, we examine the operation, at laboratory scale, of precipitation reactors and centrifuges for protein precipitate recovery and dewatering and how they might best mimic large-scale reactors and centrifuges, in this case, a...

Monsoonal airflow from the tropics triggers torrential rainfall over coastal regions of East Asia in summer, bringing flooding situations into areas of growing population and industries. However, impacts of rapid seasonal warming of the shallow East China Sea ECS and its pronounced future warming upon extreme summertime rainfall have not been explored. Here we show through cloudresolving atmosp...

The potential impacts of climate change are expected to reshape the patterns of demand and supply of water for agriculture, therefore the assessment of the impacts of climate change on agricultural water consumption will be essential. The water footprint provides a new approach to the assessment of agricultural water consumption under climate change. This paper provides an analysis of the impac...

This study investigates changes in the types of storm events occurring in the Fertile Crescent as a result of global warming. Regional climate model [fifth-generation Pennsylvania State University–National Center for Atmospheric Research Mesoscale Model (MM5)–Noah] simulations are run for the first and last five years of the twenty-first century following the Special Report on Emissions Scenari...

This project addresses two important issues relevant to the health of Canadians: the risk of waterborne illness and the health impacts of global climate change. The Canadian health burden from waterborne illness is unknown, although it presumably accounts for a significant proportion of enteric illness. Recently, large outbreaks with severe consequences produced by E. coli O157:H7 and Cryptospo...

We have studied the electrothermal atomic absorption measurement of aluminum in serum samples by direct analysis with standard additions and the use of a matrix modifier. We have also measured aluminum by analysis of the supernate after pretreatment of serum with concentrated nitric acid to precipitate proteins, and have compared the results obtained by these two techniques. Both appear to elim...
